Pay:  $26.94 per hour.  

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm

The Lead Disease Intervention Specialist (DIS) supports the mission of the Sedgwick County Health Department (SCHD) to control the spread of disease and protect the public from health threats. The position performs duties and leads a team of three Disease Intervention Specialists to ensure timely sexually transmitted infection (STI) and HIV disease investigations, contact tracing, education, specimen collection, and treatment by a medical provider. The Lead DIS develops collaborations and professional relationships with health partners, providing content expertise for STI and HIV in the community and with medical providers. Employee may deploy to the field as a responder or in a leadership position during public health emergencies. Employee may be exposed to outdoor environmental conditions. Disease Intervention Specialist work includes going to workplaces and LGBTQIA+ bars to locate clients and perform education and epidemiological outbreak investigations that may include interviews at clients homes and education at businesses.

 

Lead Area C STI Control Staff. 

  • Provide operational guidance and counseling.
  • Conduct regular audits for Area C DIS to evaluate skill, performance and effectiveness of training. Document counseling.
  • Assign work to staff and coordinate daily work processes. Evaluate and shift resources to high priority needs and coordinate actions with Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and STI-TB Control Program Manager as required.

 

Investigate and intervene in the STI and HIV transmission process to control the spread of disease.

  • Conduct case investigations and contact tracing per SCHD and KDHE protocols, including contacting, interviewing, testing and referring to treatment.
  • Obtain diagnostic specimens in accordance to KDHE policy and protocol.

 

Collaborate and consult with community partners for Disease Intervention and partner management

  • Provide accurate and relevant STI and risk reduction guidance and partner management
  • Consult with providers in the private sector, health departments and federally qualified health agencies in the region regarding STI and HIV, making recommendations regarding diagnosis and treatment of STI.
  • Present communicable disease lectures and in-service training to physicians, nurses, students, and civic groups.
  • Conduct, participate in and support outreach programs in a variety of venues which may be after normal work hours, including weekends. These venues include but are not limited to churches, bars, clubs, LGBTQIA+ events, or other public events.

 

Minimum Qualifications: Completion of a Medical Assistant certificate program plus two years of work experience performing disease investigations in a public health agency OR associate’s degree in communications or a medical- or science-related, education-based, or counseling field plus one year of work experience performing disease investigations in a public health agency. One year experience with Microsoft Suite or similar systems.  Per Sedgwick County policy, this is a driving level position that requires a valid US driver’s license without restrictions and current proof of automobile insurance. Must complete Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) IS 100, 200, and 700 courses within 30 days of employment.

 

Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in communications or a medical- or science-related, education-based, or counseling field. Two years of experience as a Disease Intervention Specialist. Two years of supervisory-related work experience such as evaluating staff performance and performing staff work audits. One year venipuncture experience. Two years of experience working with diverse populations in a collaborative manner.  Bilingual in English and Spanish. CPR Certified.
