The Product Support and Logistics Division (PSLD) is one of the most innovative divisions within Caterpillar. In PSLD, as within all of Caterpillar, our priority is our customers and helping them build a better world. We touch nearly every element of the services value stream from procurement to design and manufacturing to distribution. PSLD is responsible for Aftermarket Parts Distribution of Cat Parts, Integrated Logistics, segment Procurement and the design and manufacture of Wear Components (Undercarriage and GET) and Maintenance Components (Seals, Tubes & Hardware, Hose & Couplings, Fluids and Filters).

The Lead Data Scientist acts as the overall strategic and technical lead for the team in establishing a sound analytic approach for solving the problem at hand. The incumbent will develop good networks within the technical community to enable them to collaborate on technical solutions, obtain resources and cooperation needed, and remove roadblocks so that they can ensure the success of the team. The Lead Data Scientist will be responsible to move from being an individual contributor on an analytics team to acting as the strategic and technical lead for the service data space. They will participate on cross-functional project teams, provide overall guidance to the strategic and technical direction of the project, and mentor junior information scientists on the technical approaches being used in order to solve a problem presented by a Caterpillar Business Unit or Service Organization, a Caterpillar Dealer, or a Caterpillar Customer.
Caterpillar, Inc. uses quantitative techniques to solve problems. Typical problems include maximizing OPACC through reduction in Inventory Costs, Material Costs, and NPI costs; recommending the optimal supplier for a part; identifying sales, rental, and service opportunities for Caterpillar dealers; and developing simulation/optimization capabilities to model a new facility or product feature. In addition, analytics experts also provide assistance to high-profile enterprise-wide projects such as the Engineered Value Chain.
Responsibilities:
- Demonstrate a breadth of knowledge in the application statistical methods and/or digital methods to solve business problems
- Coach and mentor other Information Scientists in the creation, validation, and application of statistical models, as well as in implementing digital solutions
- Collaborate and understand analytics initiatives and key partnerships that should be developed and maintained outside of service data
- Demonstrate thorough knowledge of Caterpillar Inc.; its products and services; its internal systems, processes, and procedures; and its relevant external influences (competitors, laws and regulations, market conditions, etc.) to meet or exceed customer expectations
- Demonstrate strong initiative to research and apply new methods to exceed customer expectations
- Have a strong focus on continual learning in the Analytics field
- Other duties as assigned by Caterpillar management from time-to-time
Basic Requirements:
- Seven (7) to ten (10) years of professional experience utilizing quantitative analysis
- Bachelor’s degree; preferably in Statistics, Economics, Mathematics, Engineering, or a similar field with quantitative coursework
- Master’s Degree and four (4) to six (6) years of experience OR a PhD and one (1) to three (3) years of relevant experience can be substituted
- The ability to comfortably and confidently work with MS Office as well as industry standard statistics and data visualization packages (SAS, Python, SQL, PowerBI, etc.)
- Ability to demonstrate strong leadership, initiative, and interpersonal skills
- Excellent communication skills; being able to explain conclusions to customers with limited knowledge and experience with quantitative analytical methods
- The ability to travel domestically up-to 10% of the time
