Summary

The Lead Associate, Democracy, Rights, and Governance, will provide policy and advocacy support for Save the Children’s public policy & advocacy / Government Relations work related to children’s political and civic rights, locally led development (LLD)/localization, and U.S. foreign aid effectiveness.

Reporting to the Lead Advisor for Democracy, Rights, and Governance, you will help carry out Save the Children's research and advocacy agenda on locally led development/localization to fulfill the agency-wide strategy to shift power to children and local actors and implement activities related to this issue area. As part of this agenda, you will be responsible for working with key stakeholders including the U.S. government and key coalitions such as “The Modernizing Foreign Assistance Network (MFAN).” You will also support Save the Children’s internal advancement of shifting power to children and local organizations, specifically by helping to bring to the table and elevate the voices of children and local partners in USG policymaking. You will coordinate with the Global Development and Global Humanitarian policy teams.

What You’ll Be Doing (Essential Duties)
Advocate on locally led development & child participation issues externally (40%):

  • In coordination with the Lead Advisor, represent Save the Children in its engagement with Congress and the administration on aid effectiveness projects – with a focus on locally led development - independently and through coalitions like MFAN.
  • Develop materials for advocacy and/or external engagement including writing blogs, policy statements, talking points for senior level staff and policy briefs.
  • Contribute to research reports, engage in social media activities, organize, and promote roundtables and events with the Executive Branch, Congressional, NGO and think tank participants.
  • Support Save the Children relationships through engagement with external partners including contributing to regular aid reform meetings with MFAN and other coalitions, other NGOs/think tanks, and with legislative and executive branch officials.

Advocate on locally led development and child participation internally (25%):

  • Participate in working groups and contribute to research and sharing best practices across the agency on localization/LLD as well as on Child Rights to fulfill our 2022 strategy on shifting power to children and local actors and enable SCUS to be a credible advocate for LLD policy reform.
  • Shape research, write case studies, and collaborate with other departments (especially IP and PGP) to improve our approaches and Save the Children’s thought leadership on LLD.

Fundraising (10%):

  • Assist in writing grant proposals and reports related to our aid effectiveness, governance and child participation work.

Perform other duties as necessary (10%)

  • Assist with additional administrative needs of the department.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of a High School Diploma or equivalent, plus at least 3 years of relevant experience
  • Experience in a congressional office, NGO, think-tank, or in the executive branch
  • Demonstrated experience in policy-oriented writing, data gathering, research and analysis
  • Demonstrated project management skills; able to juggle multiple projects and assignments
  • Ability to work independently on tasks with minimal supervision, manage own time effectively, and problem-solve
  • Interpersonal skills and ability to be a team player in fast-paced environment
  • Professional proficiency in MS Office suite
  • Professional proficiency in spoken and written English
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with individuals and teams at all levels, both internally and externally
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering and maintaining an environment of diversity, inclusion, and belonging.

Compensation

Save the Children is offering the following salary ranges for this position, dependent on candidate location:

  • Geo 1 - NY Metro, DC, and other locations with labor costs significantly above national average: Target Salary for this position is $66,300 – $74,100 base salary
  • Geo 2 - Locations around the US National Labor Cost Average: Target Salary for this position is $60,350 – $67,450 base salary
  • Geo 3 - Locations significantly below the US National Labor Cost Average: Target Salary for this position is $54,400 – $60,800 base salary

Actual base salary may vary based upon, but not limited to, relevant experience, base salary of internal peers, business sector, and geographic location (more information on job structure is available here). Employee may be eligible for an incentive program. Save the Children also offers paid vacation, accrued at least 12 days a year, depending on paygrade and length of service, paid safety and wellness leave of at least 1 day per month worked for a full time employee which is pro rata reduced for employees working less than a full time schedule, and at least 10 paid holidays a year. Employees may be eligible for additional bonus compensation.
