Position Summary
Perform all job duties of a Medical Assistant in the department in accordance to MFA standards of care and departmental guidelines at a proficient level and provide education to MA staff on appropriate workflow and clinical assistance for the Breast Care unit. This role serves as a subject matter expert for MA duties within the Breast Care clinical area and provides preceptor duties for newly hired staff to become a competent and efficient team member.

CLINICAL
- Rooming patients:
- Identifies patients using 2 patient identifiers
- Accompanies and/or assists patients to the exam room in a professional manner
- Obtains patient vital signs, including height, weight, blood pressure, temperature, pulse, and respiration. Pulse oximetry if needed.
- Patient processing to include documentation of Vital Signs, allergies, medication reconciliation and patient current pharmacy. May also include patient medical and surgical history.
- Prepares rooms for Breast Care physician visits with adequate supplies and working equipment. This includes setting up the exam room with correct procedural equipment, verify working video towers and hydraulic chairs, verify working suction supplies and preparing the patient for examination.
- Prepares equipment and any specimen collection needs for physician to examine patients
- Explains testing and procedures to patients to prepare them for physician clinical visit.
- Actively assists physicians during examinations and procedures under direct physician supervision
- Medication Administration Duties:
- Ability to calculate dosages (demonstrated via passing yearly written medication exam) per physician orders.
- Administer medications (oral, intramuscular, subcutaneous, intradermal, inhalation, rectal, topical) using proper technique - this duty can only be performed after the MA has demonstrated competency to clinic RN yearly
- Communicates laboratory and test results to physicians and/or nurses
- May assist with other support activities, to include packaging and sterilizing equipment and supplies
- Maintains patient areas clean and safe
- Maintains and improves knowledge and expertise through continuous training and passes yearly Competency testing as signed off by RN.
- Must pass all tests in a maximum of two attempts
- Perform additional tests/procedures such as dressing change, suture and staple removal.
- The Breast Care Lead MA has excellent communication skills and informs the clinical supervisor of any potential delays in clinic schedules, problems with equipment, or complications in delivery of patient care.
- The Breast Care Lead MA is familiar with downtime procedures for Epic and understands and implements the use of designated downtime equipment and communication.They are the point person to direct other MA staff for using downtime procedures and facilitates the transition to downtime processes in the event the EHR/Epic is not available during clinical care.

ADMINISTRATIVE
- Takes inventory of supplies, equipment and medications
- Ensures clinical areas are well stocked
- Ensures expiration dates have not lapsed. Remove expired medications and supplies from stock.
- Communicates problems and concerns to supervisors
- Attends staff meetings, and provides input into the agenda.
- Reports equipment problems.
- The Breast Care Lead MA serves as an example to coworkers on how to remain efficient and professional in the completion of their duties.
- Provides excellent customer service by demonstrating positive behaviors towards patients, families/visitors, providers, other department staff, and co-workers.
- Performs QA for clinical based lab equipment
- Orders supplies and medications
- Communicates problems and concerns to supervisors and provides input to support total quality improvement activities
COMPUTER SKILLS - IDX/TOUCH WORKS
- Documents all patient care in the Electronic Medical Record attached to the correct patient encounter.
- Able to locate and follow computerized orders
- Prints labels and requisitions
- Attend IT training
- Attend all training classes to maintain computer skills and passes competency testing. All tests must be passed in a maximum of two attempts
- Proficient at electronic workflows and acts as Super User for EHR.
Qualifications
Education
- High school diploma and graduation from a Medical Assistant school are necessary.
- Current and valid certification or registration as a Medical Assistant is required.
Experience
- A minimum of 3 years of experience in general patient care (i.e. hospital, physician's office, or ambulatory care setting).
