Job description

Primary Purpose:


Provide students with appropriate opportunities, and experiences to help them learn to be innovators and change-makers by designing and creating their own products. Seeks out and implements engaging entrepreneurial and maker-focused activities. Participates in preparation, attends all required competitions, showcases and field trips as assigned. Curriculum support and training are provided. Program hours for elementary campuses are 3:30 - 5 pm and program hours for secondary campuses are 4:30 - 6 pm. Hours worked may vary depending on campus needs. Classes are subject to cancellation due to low attendance or budget fluctuations. In the event of a class cancellation, Instructors will be provided with as much notice as possible.


Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or regional accrediting agency).


Education/Certification


Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check. Non-refundable fee (approximately $50) paid

by employee.


Required Experience:

Experience working with school based personnel, community groups and/or youth groups.


Knowledge/Skills:

Working with students

Strong behavior management

Classroom lesson planning

Experience teaming

Ability to multi-task

Professionalism

Enrichment Management

The After School instructor provides enrichment experiences through activities such as the following:


  • Provide hands-on, engaging educational activities to students following DVISD LEAD Subject Guides.
  • Submit activity lesson and unit plans on pre-arranged dates to Enrichment Program Specialists.

Student Growth and Development

The After School instructor fosters student growth and development through activities such as the following:


  • Recruit and retain students in enrichment program classes as appropriate.
  • Travels with students and supervises group during evening and/or weekend events and showcases.

Classroom Management

The After School instructor works to improve the classroom through activities such as the following:


  • Supervise students during all assigned program hours and settings, including dismissal and transitions.
  • Records and submits accurate daily student attendance to Enrichment Program Specialist.
  • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
  • Manage students’ behavior in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
  • Provide appropriate interventions for students according to the LEAD Behavior Matrix.
  • Promptly report all accidents or injuries (minor or serious) to Enrichment Program Specialists and document on incident form.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.

Organization Improvement

The After School instructor works to improve the school or organization through activities such as the following:


  • Adheres to general instruction and guidance from Enrichment Program Specialist.
  • Quality of work is reviewed by campus principal and enrichment program specialist on a regular basis and feedback is provided.
  • Ensure that all After School duties and instruction during assigned LEAD working hours are directly related to the LEAD program.

Communication and Community Relations

The After School instructor promotes a positive tone for school or community relations through activities such as the following:


  • Be a positive role model for students, support the mission of the District
  • Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
  • Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.

Professional Growth and Development

The After School instructor participates in professional growth and development through activities such as the following:


  • Attends all trainings as assigned.
  • Become an integral and contributing member of the After School team.
  • Follow the guidelines set forth by campus and district.

Qualities of Effective After School Instructors

The After School instructor exhibits qualities such as the following:


  • Arrives punctually to appropriate after-school check-in location.
  • Clocks in and out of True Time at assigned times. Turns in a Time Correction form on the same day if clock-in/out is incorrect.
  • Does not work beyond assigned hours without prior authorization.
  • Informs Enrichment Program Specialist and Campus Principal in the event of an After School absence with as much notice as possible (at least 4 hours in advance).
  • Provides a two week notice to Enrichment Program Specialist and Campus Principal if no longer able to work LEAD.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in work area that could cause an accident and inform supervisor of any conditions that are not correctable immediately.
  • Shall comply with District policies, as well as state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Shall comply with the standards of conduct set out in Board Policy DH (Legal) and (Local) and with any other policies, regulations, and guidelines that impose duties, requirements, and standards.

  • Equipment applicable to the After School instructor assigned.

Working Conditions:

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors


  • Maintain emotional control under stress.
  • Work irregular hour and extended work hours to include holidays and weekends.
  • Frequent walking, standing, stooping, bending, pulling and pushing.
  • Occasional light lifting and carrying (15-44 pounds); may lift and move text books and classroom equipment.
  • Frequent exposure to: temperature extremes (hot and cold), humidity extremes, noise, low or intense illumination vibration.
  • Occasional exposure to: biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, etc.), work outside, work around moving objects or vehicles, work on uneven surfaces.
