Permanent Appointment: Reachable on the Civil Service List for Beginning Office Assistant OR current NYS Employee with one year or more of permanent or contingent-permanent status as an Office Assistant 1 (any parenthetic) OR in a position allocated to a grade 6 or above and eligible for transfer via Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law.
Provisional Appointment: There are no minimum education or experience requirements.
Note: If you are appointed provisionally, you must take the next scheduled Civil Service examination for this title and your score must be reachable on the resulting eligible list before you can be permanently appointed. If you do not pass the examination or achieve a reachable score, you may not be retained.
This is an 18-month traineeship, starting salary equated to SG-6 ($34,152); advance after twelve months to SG-8 ($38,073), then advance after 18 months to the end of traineeship SG-9 ($40,193). Candidates must demonstrate adequate keyboarding skills by prior service in a keyboarding title or successful completion of a keyboarding performance test (30 WPM WITH 96% ACCURACY). (Relevant for both permanent and provisional appointments).
This position is in the Binghamton Regional office.
- Open claim and litigation case files for attorneys and investigators.
- Type all pleadings and other court documents and correspondence from transcriber and/or templates for attorneys.
- Maintain the calendar on a daily basis with return dates, answer dates, court conferences/hearings/trials and attorney’s schedule.
- Update the Law Department database on a daily basis.
- Answer phones and respond to inquiries from the public to properly direct calls.
- Act as the main receptionist and handle all inquiries from the public at the reception window.
- Make travel arrangements, schedule rental cars, court reporters, depositions, and prepare and process travel vouchers for reimbursement.
- Provide backup secretarial assistance of all duties as needed in absence of support staff.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
