This is a lateral only recruitment and also will be used to establish an eligibility list for filling future MPD openings.

Are you ready to work in a community that supports it's law enforcement?
A lateral applicant is one who:
  1. Holds an active Oregon DPSST Police Officer certification, or holds an active Police Officer certification in their respective state; and
  2. Has been employed as a certified Police Officer for a minimum of 18 months.
    • Note: Military Police, Federal Law Enforcement, Corrections and Parole/Probation DO NOT qualify as a Lateral Police Officer.
  3. Meets DPSST established physical standards.

  4. Completes background investigation to the satisfaction of the City.
Work schedule:The patrol teams work 3/12 and 4/10 weekly schedules. These schedules, combined with a dedicated eight (8) hour training day every month, makes finding a balance between work and home time easier. Monthly training includes valuable refresher topics such as defensive tactics, EVOC, crisis negotiation, MRT, HAZMAT, ethics, leadership, CPR/first aid, and recent legal updates.

  • Currently 115 sworn officers which will increase to 123 sworn officers by 2027!

  • Potential Pay Differentials:
    • English/Spanish bilingual proficiency 4.5%
    • College credits up to 5% for a bachelor's degree
    • DPSST Intermediate certification 2%
    • DPSST Advanced certification 5%
    • Certain specialty assignments qualify for differential pay
    It's estimated a Lateral Police Officer will begin at step three (3) or four (4) but could be higher. Compensation for a Lateral Police Officer is based on the amount of directly related experience and qualifications evaluated alongside others who perform work of comparable character as required by Pay Equity Law. Six steps are included in this salary range, allowing opportunity for annual movement through the steps.

    • Prepares and disseminates reports and makes recommendations on actions to be taken.
    • Investigates local, state and federal crimes which may include:
      • Determining appropriate actions to be taken.
      • Determining resources to utilize.
      • Determining who to interview.
      • Determining appropriate evidence to be collected.
      • Determining if illegal activities are civil or criminal infractions.
  • Responds to calls for service, which may include:
    • Determining level of emergency or non-emergency.
    • Formulating tactics to be used in approaching and contacting individuals.
    • Determining if a report should be written, etc.
  • Enforces local, state and federal laws; cites and/or arrests individuals who have violated applicable laws.
  • May train and mentor peers.
  • Provides credible court testimonies.
  • Investigates traffic offenses and vehicular collisions, instructs public safety classes, conducts emergency traffic control activities, and participates in specialty details.
  • Gathers intelligence information, identifies local gangs, and investigates narcotic activities and violations.
  • Investigates a variety of in-depth cases, conducts polygraphs and interrogations, and processes evidence.
  • Scope of assigned area will depend on departmental structure and is at the discretion of the Police Chief.
