- GENERAL SUMMARY
- Works under the supervision of the Core Laboratory Manager. The Laboratory Technical Assistant's primary job function is to collect and process specimens. Performs non-complex diagnostic testing under the supervision of a MLT or MT. Performs other duties as assigned.
- QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
- GED/High School Diploma required.
- Basic chemistry and biology courses are preferred
Licensure:
- BMVL Required (Must maintain eligibility to drive as determined by SOMC insurance carriers).
Experience:
- Three months of laboratory experience required.
Interpersonal Skills:
- Excellent interpersonal skills needed in dealing with patients, patient's family, physicians and other members of the hospital staff.
Essential Technical/Motor Skills:
- Ability to use hands for repetition and fine manipulation when operating instruments and collecting and processing specimens. Ability to operate computer input terminal.
Essential Physical Requirements:
- Occasionally lift 20 pounds and carries 10 pounds or less. Must stand and/or walk for 75% - 100% of work hours to obtain specimens and perform testing.
Essential Mental Requirements:
- Ability to follow established procedures. Ability to pay close attention to detail when labeling and preparing specimens and solutions. Requires the ability to adjust to a fluctuating workload and meet established deadlines.

Essential Sensory Requirements:
- Requires good vision and color discrimination to perform testing.
Exposure to Hazards:
- Exposure to bio-hazardous materials, specimens, needles and infectious diseases in clinical laboratory and patient care environments. Chemical exposure in laboratory testing areas.

- JOB SPECIFIC DUTIESAND PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

- Orders and processes specimens for various laboratory tests.
- Performs non-complex testing on automated instruments under the supervision of a Medical Laboratory Technician or Medical Technologist.
- Performs and documents Quality Control and daily instrument maintenance.
- Centrifuges specimens. Checks pendings and aliquots specimens for testing. Prepares and labels simple solutions for use in diagnostic testing. Prepares specimens for transport to laboratories.
- Keeps work area neat and clean. Follows all safety policies and procedures. Takes inventory, stocks and orders supplies for area.
- Participates in training and orientation of new staff and students.
- Assists managers/supervisors with clerical and technical support duties as assigned.
