Job Title: Lab Technician
General Statement of Duties: The Lab Technician performs laboratory testing and reporting of soils, concrete, and asphalt construction materials. The Lab Technician works independently on broad projects under direction of a Dept. Manager and no direct supervisory duties are required.
Examples of Duties: (Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the listed examples include all that may be found in this job.)
• Performs laboratory testing and reporting of soils, concrete and asphalt construction materials.
• May perform geotechnical lab duties, including soil classification and soil testing.
• May perform environmental studies, including Phase I environmental site assessments, Phase II ESAs and asbestos surveys.
• Follows established lab guidelines and practices them.
• Adheres to and ensures compliance with all security regulations. Ensures good housekeeping in accordance with state and federal specifications which relate to material handling.
• Communicates findings to engineers, internal partners and concerned individuals and agencies.
• Calibrates equipment in accordance with appropriate methods and standards.
• Supports visits, tours and audits of the area by auditors, visitors or other authorized personnel.
• Performing soil laboratory testing (Moisture contents, Atterberg limits, sieve analysis, organic content, hydrometer, etc.)
• Performing compression testing of concrete cylinders and beams
• Data entry and review
• Maintaining a schedule and effectively communicating the schedule with the engineers
• Duties required to maintain lab certification (testing/prepping performance samples, completing forms, etc.)
• Calibration of laboratory equipment
• General lab upkeep
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Strong Knowledge of laboratory principles, soil and testing procedures.
• Knowledge of engineering and construction industries.
• Knowledge of state and federal regulations related to testing.
• Skill with Microsoft office such as Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
• Excellent Communication skills both verbal and written
• Strong Skill and ability in growing the service market and being comfortable with regularly interacting with potential clients.
• Ability to be a critical thinker that is highly motivated and a team player.
• Ability to communicate verbally and in writing
• Ability to present data in reports in an organized and accurate fashion.
• Ability to follow quality standards and enforce them.
• Ability to relate to all types of personalities and develop strong business relationships.
• Ability to be reliable with strong and consistent attendance.
Minimum Qualifications
• 1-3+ years of work experience
• Clean driving record
Education:
• High School graduate
