Overview
$5,000 Sign On Bonus!
Coordinates the laboratory team so that accurate and timely clinical diagnostic information is provided to healthcare professionals in order to ensure high quality patient care and customer service.
Responsibilities
Workflow Management
• Provides technical leadership by directing, auditing, assessing, coordinating and delegating technical work, and safety and disaster processes according to LEAN production standards.
Specimen Collection
• Obtains, labels, and delivers specimens in accordance with LEAN phlebotomy standards.
Specimen Handling
• Prioritizes, performs, judges, and reports routine and esoteric procedures within established time guidelines.
Equipment Maintenance
• Maintains equipment, inventory according to KANBAN, and work area according to LEAN standards, and documents appropriately.
Critical Thinking
• Performs, evaluates, and documents advanced troubleshooting and problem-solving activities, and interprets data for appropriate health professionals.
Quality
• Documents, maintains, and reviews quality control (QC), proficiency testing, quality assurance, and other records to meet regulatory requirements.
Training
• Instructs, trains, and evaluates students and new employees.
Emergency Communication
• This position may be assigned a specific mission to address in an emergency situation to assist in disaster response and recovery as part of the UnityPoint Health - Des Moines Hospital Emergency Incident Command System (HEICS). Situations of a critical nature may require an individual to perform multiple tasks until additional support can be obtained.
Basic UPH Performance Criteria

• Demonstrates ability to meet business needs of department with regular, reliable attendance.
• Employee maintains current licenses and/or certifications required for the position.
• Practices and reflects knowledge of HIPAA, TJC, DNV, OSHA and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare.
• Completes all annual education and competency requirements within the calendar year.
• Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff. Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance.

Not required to perform the essential functions of the position.
Education:
Education must be obtained which is sufficient to allow certification under one of the Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) OR Medical Technologist (MT)/Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) Certifying Agencies' examination routes. Must meet Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) requirements to perform highly complex testing.
Note: Certifying Agencies include but are not limited to the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Certification (BOC), American Medical Technologist (AMT) Certification, and American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB) Board of Registry (ABOR). As long as these are met, any exam may be taken. Additionally, any regulatory agency personnel standards, which are applicable to the position, must be met.
Experience:
Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or Medical Technologist (MT)/Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS).
Additionally, at least one (1) of the two (2) years of experience in the area to coordinate for all areas except Flow Cytometry and Molecular which require MT level of education with four years of experience with one year in Flow Cytometry or Molecular.
License(s)/Certification(s):
Technician Certification (MLT) OR Technologist/Scientist (MT/MLS) Certification
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Must be able to read, write, and speak fluent English.
Other:
Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions.
