Camp Kitchen Staff and Kitchen Staff Leader (Camp Gambill, Summer 2024)

This is a seasonal position from the end of May to end of July 2024. This position works Thursday through Sunday. Pay rates start at $325/week for a 4-day week.

About GSNETX Summer Camp:

Camp Gambill, our waterfront camp on Lake Gibbons outside Paris, TX, offers sleepaway family and troop camp experiences for girls ages 5-18. We serve approximately 80 campers per week from a variety of racial/ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. Campers come to camp with adults from their family or troop.

Job summary:

Camp Kitchen Crew are responsible for supporting the operation of an effective summer camp program for campers and staff by providing food service. This team member serves as a positive role model, cooperative teammate, and helpful problem solver. The position reports to the Camp Director or other supervising staff. Paid staff training is provided at the beginning of the summer.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Champion a positive, inclusive, caring, safe, and fun camp environment and promote the values of the Girl Scout Promise and Law
  • Perform physical work in our commercial kitchen and dining hall, completing tasks on schedule as designated by supervisor
  • Work as part of a team to meet camp operation needs
  • Participate in staff trainings and meetings as requested
  • Follow work procedures as requested by supervisor, including maintaining written records as needed
  • Maintain camp supplies and equipment in orderly fashion, managing resources wisely
  • Practice all safety, sanitation, and hygiene standards in workspaces and on camp property

Specific roles available:

  • Kitchen Crew Leader (age 21+): Serve as kitchen crew with additional leadership responsibilities. Accountable for overall success of kitchen serving 270 meals and 100 snacks daily, including leading a team of 3 Kitchen Crew in preparation of meals for timely food service, sufficient portions, appealing presentation, dietary accommodations, and excellent food quality. Manage inventory, supplies, and overall operation of kitchen. Manage kitchen safety, sanitation, and hygiene standards. Maintain regular communication with Camp Director on food service needs such as orders and adjustments to menus.
  • Kitchen Crew (age 16+): Prepare, serve, and clean up meals and snacks, including organizing supplies, measuring and chopping ingredients, cooking and baking, building serving trays, washing dishes, cleaning workspaces, and maintaining organization in food storage areas.

Minimum requirements:

  • Willingness to live and work respectfully and fruitfully with diverse Staff and campers all day, with limited privacy and personal time
  • Willingness to be active all day, partially in an outdoor environment with variable weather conditions (heat, humidity, rain, wind) and to walk extensively around camp
  • Willingness to role model respect, positivity, smiling, cheerfulness, kindness, patience, honesty, inclusion, good mental hygiene, and accountability and to self-regulate emotions respectfully in a variety of circumstances
  • Willingness to listen to, learn from, and cooperate with others
  • Willingness to embrace a simple living environment and to use group latrines (private toilets and showers), if living onsite
  • Willingness to learn and follow kitchen safety, sanitation, and hygiene standards
  • Willingness to obtain food handler certificate during staff training (Kitchen Crew)
  • Willingness to obtain ServSafe food manager certificate prior to staff training (Kitchen Crew Leader)
  • Experience in food service and leading a team (Kitchen Crew Leader)
  • Ability to work long hours all day and all week (staff get personal breaktime each day during the week and days off between sessions)
  • Ability to complete full term (all weeks) of camp agreement

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience serving youth in a work or volunteer setting
  • Experience in food service or cooking (Kitchen Crew)
  • Current or past food service certifications appreciated

Must abstain from:

  • Use of tobacco products, herbal intoxicants (CBD, THC, gummies, etc.), vaping and electronic cigarettes, alcohol, illegal drugs, firearms, and fireworks while on camp property or while on duty, plus abstain from possessing on camp property and from returning to camp under the influence of any such substances
  • Use of explicit language or harmful language
  • Volatile expressions of emotion
  • Romantic or sexual activity on camp, no public display of affection
  • Wearing clothing that features alcohol, drugs, or harmful topics or language
  • Sharing or discussing private, adult issues with campers
  • Using (engaging with) cell phone while on duty (can be used during scheduled staff break time, plus we have a radio system for camp communication and emergencies)

Activities occur both inside and outside and employee is subject to both environmental conditions; however, employee is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
