Job description

Under general supervision of the Operations Supervisor, the Irrigation Specialist/Equipment Operator operates a variety of construction equipment used to perform skilled work in the installation, maintenance, repair and operation of the City's irrigation systems at city facilities and rights-of-way.
Irrigation Specialist/Equipment Operator
  1. Install, replace/repair and maintain irrigation systems at city facilities and streetscaping inside the rights-of-way.
  2. Perfomed skilled duties operating a variety of light to heavy equipment used in making irrigation repairs, to include but not limited to, a trencher, mini-track hoe, back hoe, and skidsteer.
  3. Conduct routine irrigation system inspections to ensure proper system operation and coverage and to improve irrigation systems operation.
  4. Replace controllers and irrigation heads as needed to ensure optimal performance and conservation of water.
  5. Modify and improve existing systems to ensure the city's inventory of irrigation systems are in compliance with the TCEQ requirements.
  6. Use computer, laptop and/or mobile device to complete work order activities and track expenses for equipment, material and labor
  7. Participate in the preventative and corrective maintenance of equipment by cleaning and performing pre-operation equipment inspections, identifying and reporting equipment maintenance repair needs to Fleet Equipment Technicians and assisting with minor equipment maintenance.
  8. Perform other duties as assigned.
Licensed Irrigator II/Equipment Operator
The Licensed Irrigator performs all duties of the Irrigation Specialist in addition to the following duties:
  1. Program and modify electronic controllers computer systems to maintain water efficiency of irrigation and sprinkler systems.
  2. Design and develop irrigation system specifications.
  3. Test backflow devices.
  4. Perform other duties as assigned.

Required:

High School Diploma or G.E.D., and one (1) year experience related to area of assignment; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience. State of Texas Class "B" CDL or the ability to obtain within 90 days of employment, and maintain. Designated as a Licensed Irrigation Installer by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), or ability to obtain the certification within the first 90 days of employment, and maintain. Experience with wire tracer and remote unit operation and use. Possess basic computer skills to include, the ability to operate electronic mobile devices and computers/laptops. Knowledge of materials and products used in landscape irrigation installation and maintenance. Knowledge of hydraulic and electric system installation, operation, and repair Knowledge of irrigation system design and general plant/turf water requirements. Knowledge of safety practices and procedures. Willingness and availability for emergency response (subject) to 24-hour recall.

Licensed Irrigator/Equipment Operator - additional requirements

Required:

High School Diploma or G.E.D., and two (2) years experience related to area of assignment; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience. Designated as a Licensed Irrigation Installer by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), and ability to maintain the certification. Designated as a Licensed Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), or the ability to obtain within six (6) months from date of hire, or from date of promotion.

Physical Requirements:

Continuous outdoor activity, frequent sitting, standing, walking, squatting, bending, twisting upper body, climbing, exposure to extreme heat, cold, noise, mechanical hazards, fume/odor hazards, toxic waste/material hazards, occasional kneeling, crawling, carrying up to ninety (90) pounds, lifting up to ninety (90) pounds.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Drug Screening: Due to the safety and/or security sensitive nature of this position, individuals shall be subject to pre-employment or pre-placement drug and/or controlled substance testing as outlined in City policy.
