Job description

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Qualified candidates must be either an MPH or an MS Epidemiology student at SUNY Albany’s School of Public Health; AND must have completed at least 24 credits of coursework toward their degree including at least four of the core courses; AND must have maintained a GPA of 3.0 or better AND are unable to participate in an internship if on academic probation.
This position requires that the incumbent will report to the official work location and live within commuting distance to the official work location. Telecommuting may not be available. If telecommuting is available, the incumbent will be required to have a telephone/mobile device, and Internet access.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, Teams, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Experience analyzing data and conducting quality checks using SAS.
  • Experience and/or knowledge of surveillance and epidemiology.
  • Demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Courses: Epi 501, Sta 553 or equivalent. Epi 514.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The student’s role in this project will be to assist Registry staff with analysis and data quality assessment. The student will use Birth Defects Registry data to evaluate the differences between active and passive case ascertainment of selected birth defects. This project will involve using SAS and Excel to compare and summarize active and passive surveillance data. Other tasks will include identifying ways to improve data quality in the Birth Defects Registry.
The student may also have the opportunity to participate in additional quality checks of Birth Defects Registry Data. Such quality checks may involve reviewing discrepant demographic data or reviewing codes assigned to defects to ensure proper coding from ICD-10 to British Pediatric Association (BPA) codes and other checks as determined by senior staff.
DETAILS OF EMPLOYMENT
This position is anticipated to last through the Summer Semester. The incumbent in this position must compete a total of 240 hours (3 credits) or 480 hours (6 credits). Thereafter, the incumbent may work up to 40 hours/wk.
This position does not require travel.
