Undergraduate Student Internship Job

Undergraduate Student Interns work in cross-functional teams to help change the futures of the youth in our care through trauma-informed care interventions. Under the supervision of a Lad Lake Field Supervisor, Undergraduate Student Interns will work in close collaboration with their assigned service area team (unit therapist, case manager, unit manager, and treatment specialists) and model healthy coping strategies, emotional regulation, and daily living skills. Undergraduate Student Interns partner with our youth to provide healing opportunities through trauma-informed care, developing relationships, and evidenced-based practices and are expected to attend as many professional training opportunities as their school and work schedules allow.

Note: The youth in our care are generally between 12-18 years of age, have experienced historical and systemic trauma, and as a result possess mental health needs. Many of our youth are affected by the juvenile justice and child welfare systems. As a result, it is expected that while serving an internship, Undergraduate Student Interns will be expected to gain a working knowledge of all inter-agency protocols impacting youth treatment plan outcomes.

Essential Duties (under the oversight of a Lad Lake Field Supervisor):

  • Serve as a positive role model for youth in our residential care programs
  • Intentional effort to provide opportunities for youth to enhance their skills, abilities, and interests
  • Provide active supervision of youth by engaging in activities that are of interest to them
  • Plan and facilitate activities and daily routines
  • Crisis intervention with youth through verbal de-escalation techniques
  • Engage in, assess, and document youth activities (shift logs, incident reports, behavioral management logs, databases, etc.) collaboratively with staff
  • Actively collaborate with Lad Lake treatment teams to achieve optimal outcomes as requested
  • Support our youth, their families, and community partners in healing and growth activities as directed and in collaboration with staff
  • Attend team meetings and provide verbal and written input as requested
  • Maintain confidentiality within all written and verbal communications
  • Regular punctual attendance

Qualifications:

  1. The ideal candidate is 21 years of age or older, is actively pursuing a bachelor’s degree in a related field (human services, social work, psychology, criminal justice, etc.) and has some experience in the youth social service industry.
  2. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Ability to be patient and understanding of life’s difficult situations; ability to search for and recognize the good in people and situations; ability to stay calm and de-escalate situations where people are tense and frustrated; ability to follow written and verbal instructions; working knowledge of computers and MS Office; ability to multi-task and use time effectively and efficiently; demonstrated respect and awareness of cultural, ethnic, LGBTQIA2S+, and ability differences.
  3. Ability to follow instructions, attend professional development training sessions, and learn techniques and skills designed to enhance youth development
  4. Ability to demonstrate empathy, humility, and an understanding and appreciation of DEI principles.
  5. Ability to communicate effectively and work with a team.
  6. Physical Demands: Duties require physical activity while engaging with youth in the program. Ability to stand, sit, twist, and lift.
