Canadian National Railway Company (CN) is looking for a highly motivated person to fulfill a full-time (40h/week) Intern, Industrial Hygienist - Safety position in Homewood, IL from May- Aug 2024.

Job Summary

The Intern, Industrial Hygiene - Safety is responsible for understanding the techniques used in industrial hygiene to evaluate data, as well as apply regulatory and professional standards to protect employees and the community. The role is performed in collaboration with the Industrial Hygiene team to conduct extensive research and summary to better understand the exposure risks within the railroad industry. After an initial orientation, the incumbent will work with department supervisors and Safety team members on their projects, provide daily or weekly reports on the progress and the challenges incurred.

Major Responsibilities
  • Evaluate workplace task biomechanics for Transportation, Engineering and Mechanical departments using Soter Analytics Video Software
  • Identify tasks routinely performed by various departments and evaluate using a video processing tool
  • Trial various biomechanical improvements, evaluate using tool and provide best practice recommendations
  • Provide coaching and feedback to various groups on proper biomechanics
  • Develop education materials based on assessments and employee feedback
  • Develop a CN specific job exposure matrix by synthesizing research as well as historical and actual industrial hygiene data
  • Identify tasks routinely performed by various departments
  • Identify exposure profiles through literature or through CN historical and actual hygiene sampling data
  • Rank exposure profiles using the American Industrial Hygiene Association - Occupational Exposure Management guidelines
  • Develop educational materials for each department based on tasks assessed and exposures identified
  • Evaluate CN's compliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Hazard Communication program
  • Perform spot inspections of hazardous materials inventories and update as appropriate
  • Resolve if the Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) are available in the system and update them accordingly
Requirements
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • The role requires occasional travel (30%) within Canada and the United States (U.S.)
  • Knowledge in Industrial Hygiene sampling*

*Any experience/education/skills/knowledge for these above would be considered as an asset


Education
  • Working towards a Bachelor's Degree in an Occupational Safety and Health Field or Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics)
  • Working towards a Master's Degree in an Occupational Safety and Health field*
