Communications Internship – Summer 2024
The communications team at the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) in Bethesda, MD, seeks an intern to help with communications, media relations and social media. Join us and get diverse, hands-on experience to build your resume and prepare you for jobs in the Health Communications field.
The position is offered for credit and a $1,500 stipend. Competitive applicants will have completed at least two semesters of communications and/or public health course work. Experience with medical terminology will be helpful, but not required. Undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to apply. Please supply a letter of interest and resume.
This internship will be remote, with the chance for local candidates to meet with communications team members at the AGA office in Bethesda, Maryland once or twice throughout the summer. We request a commitment of 15 hours/2 days a week from early June through August.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE: Intern, Health Communications
REPORTS TO: Manager, Communications & Media Relations
General Responsibilities
- Learn the basics of media relations for a nonprofit health organization and assist with media monitoring using MuckRack software.
- Help with the development of social media content for promoting AGA’s clinical guidance and other AGA news.
- Write promotional articles and press releases, which can be used as writing samples for graduate school or future job applications.
- Conduct research into social media trends and share findings with the communications team.
- Assist with tracking and organizing statistics and metrics, which will provide hands-on experience with diverse platforms (Google Analytics, email marketing system, Hootsuite).
- Help identify topics to supplement and expand AGA’s patient education materials.
- Participate in monthly content planning meetings with the communications team and weekly all-staff scrums.
- The opportunity to present at a team meeting and practice public speaking and presentation skills.
- Additional communications duties as needed.
Qualifications
- Completion of 2 academic semesters (or 3 quarters) of communications coursework. Preference given to coursework with a Health Communications or public health focus. Pre-Med students with an interest in medical writing or Health Communications are encouraged to apply.
- Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office preferred.
- Strong organizational skills preferred.
