POSITION OVERVIEW

The Intelligent Building Engineer plays a key role in the successful execution of projects. Reporting to the Director of the Performance Group, this individual will provide technical and engineering excellence, as well as successful delivery of work to our customers. The Intelligent Building Engineer is responsible for a high level of customer satisfaction by ensuring expectations are clearly communicated and managed – both externally and internally. The successful candidate will also contribute to a dynamic team environment by being proactive, communicating clearly to all stakeholders, and modeling a highly collaborative working environment. This person will also actively support the business development process, through the writing of proposals and meeting with prospective and current customers.


TYPICAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Specific responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, the following:

Transform the practice and push innovation:

  • Bridge across KFI’s disciplines and operating groups. Provide guidance to engineering and performance groups on implementation of Smart Buildings within KFI’s client base.
  • Explore new approaches and technologies as it pertains to Intelligent Building controls and analytics.
  • Process improvement (proposals-to-design-to-implement-to-monitor/iterate).
  • Client interaction:
    • Shares technical knowledge plus business expertise with clients to match solutions to their operational needs and favorably position KFI.
    • Pre-positioning across operating groups.
    • Differentiate KFI’s offerings.
    • Work with clients on creative solutions.
    • Scope out project requirements. Write proposals, lead interviews.
    • Attend conferences and professional organizations as a representative of KFI.
  • Controls and Communications coordination:
    • Coordinate dissimilar systems: Lighting controls, BAS, Electrical metering and control, nurse call, elevators, shades, etc.
    • Value added selling points: vision/leadership and de-risking of projects.
    • Leads a team of cross-disciplinary experts.
  • Design capabilities of select systems:
    • Knowledge of voice/data telecommunications cabling infrastructure, outside plant infrastructure, audio/visual systems, paging/mass notification systems, digital signage, card access security, CCTV security (IP cameras), video management, and video storage, building automation systems.
    • Plays a role in portions of project design, for example security, lighting controls, BAS, etc.
    • QA/QC role
  • Maintains strong knowledge of Design Standards (e.g. RCDD, TIA/EIA, CPTED, CPP, PSP, NEC, NFPA, etc.).
  • Develops estimates for assigned scope of work and is accountable for ensuring we stay within scope.
  • Creates project plans and schedules for execution of work.
  • May serve as project manager for complete controls and/or technology-based projects, when assigned.
  • Actively manages assigned projects, driving them to completion. This will require a combination of strong delegation and follow-up, combined with personal execution of work as needed.
  • Supports the business development process through input to proposals, meeting and interviewing with prospective customers, etc.
  • Provides work direction to other team members, including subcontractors, as assigned.
  • Approves final equipment selections and drawing submittals.
  • Provides technical and engineering support to other departments/disciplines.
  • Possess/maintain a basic understanding of Architectural, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil and Structural Engineering construction practices.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

The successful candidate will have a pragmatic and applied approach, while at the same time bringing a creative examination of customer needs and solutions. In addition, they will have demonstrated a strong proficiency in low-voltage systems design in their core discipline.

Additional Requirements include:

  • 10+ years of relevant technical design experience across a variety of commercial buildings (public sector, office, schools, higher education, healthcare).
  • Strong interpersonal skills to enable effective interaction with Designers, Engineers and Project Managers.
  • Strong communication and influencing skills, both written and verbal.
  • A technical degree in or extensive experience with Information Technology, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or other applicable design and engineering fields.
  • Registrations/Certifications preferred but not required: WiredScore, SmartScore, professional engineer.
  • Knowledge and experience with industry Design Standards (e.g. RCDD, TIA/EIA, CPTED, CPP, PSP, NEC, NFPA, etc.).

EDUCATION

A technical degree in or extensive experience with Information Technology, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or other applicable design and engineering fields. Additional industry recognized certifications are a plus.
