Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is an independent, nonprofit organization providing adult cancer treatment and groundbreaking research focused on cancer and infectious diseases. Based in Seattle, Fred Hutch is the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in Washington.

As a member of Fred Hutch's Marketing & Communications Department, the Integrated Communications Coordinator will help support communications efforts that position Fred Hutch as a leader and expert resource in cancer and infectious diseases. Reporting to the senior communications manager, the integrated Communications Coordinator supports initiatives across the communications team's specialty areas of media relations, internal and patient communications and social media to reach a variety of internal and external audiences. This role will also collaborate with counterparts responsible for marketing, content and web design, and colleagues in Philanthropy, Government & Community Relations and Business Development on integrated communications and marketing initiatives.
This role offers a hybrid of virtual and on-site work, with the expectation of being in the Seattle office approximately 2 days per week.
Responsibilities
Media Relations: 40-50%
  • With supervisor guidance, support media activities including screening media requests and drafting pitches, news releases and social posts.
  • Develop and update media lists, reporter/news outlet research and backgrounders; track reporter interactions; and help monitor media inbox.
  • Compile communications team reports and tools including weekly highlights, semimonthly reports, tip sheets, etc.
  • Help monitor and measure earned media mentions, as well as compile media coverage reports.
  • Research and monitor current events and trends for earned and social media outreach.
  • Create and update a news editorial calendar and contribute to other cross-team editorial calendars.
  • Build and maintain annual "best of" award lists.
  • Support media relations planning and content creation for annual industry conferences.

Internal & Patient Communications: 40-50%
  • Draft stories and contribute updates to the Fred Hutch intranet site.
  • Help monitor and support digital signage and posting updates.
  • Collaborate with and support internal and patient communications team on initiatives, workgroups and other projects.

Social Media: 5-10%
  • Collaborate with and support the social media team with initiatives, drafting content and monitoring conversations across Fred Hutch channels including Facebook, X, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok and YouTube.
  • With supervisor guidance, serve as a liaison for social media accounts connected to Fred Hutch divisions, labs and therapies.

Other: 5%
  • Other tasks as assigned

Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.
  • 2 years in a marketing/communications role OR 1 year in a marketing/communications role for a health care, nonprofit cancer foundation or scientific research organization.
  • Excellent writing, editing and verbal communications skills and familiarity with AP style.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
  • Working knowledge of social media platforms (Facebook, X, Instagram, LinkedIn), virtual meeting and event platforms and basic communications principles.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, journalism and/or marketing.
  • Experience in health care, life sciences/academic research and/or nonprofit organizations.
  • Familiarity with web CMS (Adobe AEM, WordPress) and email marketing platforms.
  • Familiarity with media databases and monitoring tools (Cision, Zignal).
  • Basic digital design skills. Experience with Adobe Creative Suite (specifically Photoshop) and Canva a plus.
  • Aptitude for distilling complex information (health care, science, technology) into stories and message points.
  • Familiarity with producing online content and amplifying stories and campaigns through digital channels and social media.
  • Experience generating content for multiple audiences including those curious about science, disease prevention, health care and supporting mission-based organizations.
  • Project management skills with experience tracking and managing multiple projects with differing priorities and deadlines.
  • Strong interest in the Fred Hutch mission.
  • Basic understanding of/experience with creation and delivery of clear and persuasive communications for varying audiences.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate within and across teams, and comfortable working across all levels of the organization and with a diverse group of stakeholders across different subject areas.
  • Organized self-starter comfortable with ambiguity and complexity.
  • Analytical approach and creative problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to occasionally attend and/or support events and stakeholder needs outside of traditional business hours and across time zones.

The hourly pay range for this position is from $29.76 to $42.37 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
