Job Identification
Title: Instructional Assistant - Special Education
Department/Location: Special Education Program - Elementary School or Middle School
Evaluator/Supervisor: Building principal or PPS Administrator will supervise and evaluate; special education teacher will guide and supervise daily work and provide input to evaluation
Job Summary
Under the guidance of a special education teacher, the Special Education IA performs duties that support the academic and social success of students who receive special education services. The Special Education IA also assists in classroom-based and school-wide activities that support the smooth functioning of the school and the special education program.
Job Duties
Assists with general school procedures for safety and order (fire drills, tornado drills, monitoring of and communication regarding student behavior)
Participates in trainings arranged by the principal, teacher, or special education department and offered during the work day
Under the direction of the special education teacher, works with individual students and groups of students to reinforce academic learning
Accompanies students to classes and assists students with tasks assigned by the classroom teacher
Assists students working in cooperative groups; cues appropriate behavior
Escorts students to classes and appointments with support staff
Monitors students during structured and unstructured school activities
During teacher-directed whole-group instruction, circulates in the classroom and attends to students who require adult assistance
Assists students in the use of school-based resources (computers, library, office procedures, lunchroom, locker)
Monitors student work completion and intervenes to ensure timely completion of classwork and homework
Assists students with organizational skills and the planning of nightly homework
Approaches special education teacher and classroom teacher with questions or concerns that involve issues with student learning or other job duties
Seeks direction and feedback when necessary
