Scope of Position:

Key responsibilities focus on optical based investigations of specific fluid dynamic aspects of business-driven projects. Scope includes problem statement development, investigation planning, design and construction of appropriate optical technique, experiment execution, image and data analysis, and critical thinking to link findings to the overall project. This role engages across a range of Corning businesses and stages of innovation.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities

  • Work with the IFD team to perform optical based fluidic investigations.
  • Develop aspects of custom image/data processing software.
  • Conduct hands on work in a laboratory, engineering, or manufacturing environment.
  • Communicate project status and updates with relevant documentation.
  • Maintain laboratory, process equipment, and laboratory materials.

 

Required Skills

  • Post graduate knowledge of one or more aspects of Fluid Dynamics and turbulent flows. Examples include aerodynamics, hydrodynamics, two phase flows such as sprays, or reacting flows such as combustion.
  • Exposure with post graduate knowledge of one or more optical diagnostic techniques applied to Fluid Dynamics, such as PIV, Rayleigh/Raman imaging, PLIF, or similar methods.
  • Exposure with post graduate knowledge of image processing techniques.
  • Post graduate knowledge of gaussian and non-gaussian statistics.
  • Experience with Matlab or C++ for image and data analysis.

 

Desired Skills

  • Experience assembling laboratory scale gas or liquid flow systems.
  • Experience with temperature and pressure sensors and gauges.
  • Experience with labview, automation, and systems integration.
  • Ability to learn quickly and independently.

 

Education & Experience

  • Enrolled in relevant PhD graduate program, including mechanical, automotive, aerospace, or similar degree of study.

 

This position does not support immigration sponsorship.  


The range for this position is $1,519.00 - $3,074.00 biweekly.  Starting pay for the successful applicant is prescribed based on geographic location, nature of position, and year in school.
