Job description

Image Visualization and Infrared Spectroscopy (IVIS) Facility: The IVIS Facility is managed by Michael Ramsey and is comprised of three labs designed to function as integrated state-of-the-art image analysis, Infrared Spectroscopy, and a Global Positioning System (GPS) center. It contains a Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer with the capability to collect concurrent reflectance and emissions spectra of rocks and soils up to a temperature of 1600 K. All image processing and data storage are managed by a 13-node Linux cluster and over 100 terabytes (TB) of online disk storage. Workstations, archival data, and an array of field-based equipment (including multiple thermal and multispectral cameras) are also available for the research position.

Position Details: The position is funded for twelve months with extensions possibly dependent on external funding. Work will be focused on data collection and calibration of the PI's new MMT-gasCam instrument, which entails both laboratory and field deployment, developing code, and working with other scientists on the project. The secondary focus will be the application of volcanic plume modeling to geostationary infrared data in support of two of the PI's funded NASA projects. The position is housed within the Department of Geology and Environmental Science at the University of Pittsburgh working with Prof. Michael Ramsey. The annual salary starts at a rate of $58,000 and includes a strong benefits package of health/dental/vision coverage as well as optional access to other university benefits. Some remote work options may be possible. The start date is January 1, 2024.

 Required:

  • Ph.D. in one of the following fields: physics, engineering, remote sensing, computer science, geology, or volcanology.
  • Experience with remote sensing analysis software, thermal/thermophysical modeling, and computer programming.

Preferred:

  • Experience with imaging optics, thermal IR data, camera design, and calibration.
  • Experience with thermal IR remote sensing and geospatial data analysis.
  • Experience working with plume/gas models and modeling software.
  • Proficiency in working with large datasets and computer programming (e.g., IDL, Python, R, and/or Google Earth Engine).
  • Commitment to open data and code practices.

To apply: Please apply through Talent Center and email Prof. Michael Ramsey at mramsey@pitt.edu with the email subject "TIR Data/Modeling Postdoc Opportunity" and the following combined as 1 pdf attachment:

  • A cover letter describing your career goals, experience, and interest in the position.
  • Resume/CV including contact information for three professional references.
