Job description

Reports to the Vice President, External & Legal Affairs. Develops and aligns Human Resources (HR) policies, programs, and initiatives that further Young Brothers’ (YB) achievement of its strategic and business goals. Advises YB’s board, president, and leadership team accordingly. Leads the development of strategies and interventions for workforce planning, performance management, and talent development to improve performance and drive productivity and profitability of the business. Build and maintain strong relationships across a broad group of stakeholders including the company’s board of directors, president, leadership team, management, and employees, as well as union leaders, parent company, and shared services company. Establishes credibility as an effective developer of solutions to human resource and employee relations challenges and opportunities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSStrategic Duties
  • Develops and aligns HR policies, programs, and initiatives that further YB’s achievement of its strategic and business goals.
  • Ensures company vision, mission, and values are communicated and understood at all levels, providing clarity for the behaviors expected of all employees to realize an engaging, high performing, and accountable culture.
  • Provides a strategic framework to assist YB’s board, president, leadership team, and management in understanding YB HR policies, programs and initiatives; impact of existing and new laws, rules, and regulations; and impact of potential legislation on HR issues.
  • Collaborates with the compensation subcommittee of YB’s board (compensation committee) and shared services on the design and establishment of competitive compensation structures and benefits packages. Assesses the sustainability and viability of all remuneration-related interventions.
  • Collaborates and coordinates with the compensation subcommittee chair to facilitate quarterly compensation subcommittee meetings.
  • Leads the design of an employee relations framework that strategically manages employee engagement, employee satisfaction, employee well-being, and overall organizational performance.
  • Establishes and implements YB’s staffing budget and the budget for the Human Resources department.
  • Advocates for the development of leadership skills and qualities across the organization.
  • Champions the development of YB’s employer brand to aid in attracting and retaining talent.
  • Champions the continued development of YB’s performance-based reward management system based on value sharing for YB and its employees.
  • Leads the strategies, development and maintenance of a succession plan covering all key and strategic roles.
  • Analyzes organizational HR issues, understands their impacts on business outcomes, and effectively communicates the link between the two, as appropriate. Develops effective solutions on these issues.
Administration and Compliance Duties
  • Implements the company Affirmative Action Plan (AAP). Carries out duties of company AAP/Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) officer in handling EEO complaints and litigation.
  • Actively participates in the company benefits program activities (e.g., committees, renewal meetings, etc.) to ensure alignment with strategic and business objectives.
  • Oversees service level agreements with shared services and with the organization’s enterprise wide benefits broker, including service quality.
  • Oversees HR team members responsible for ensuring all new hire and annual compliance training requirements are met.
  • Oversees the annual goal setting and performance evaluation timelines, communication, and training to ensure employee evaluations are completed in a quality and timely fashion.
  • Oversees the HR team members responsible for addressing employee/labor relations issues.
  • Manages and leads investigation of all ethics hotline complaints assigned to YB HR, consulting with YB legal as applicable.
  • Supports the applicable collective bargaining team during contract negotiations.
  • Performs special duties and other projects as appropriately assigned.
Leadership
  • Leads and manages the team of HR and Payroll professionals, ensuring that the team provides high quality service throughout the organization. Effectively communicates the HR department’s mission, vision, goals, and objectives.
  • Understands and complies with YB’s policies and procedures, including AAP, EEO, Non-Discrimination, Harassment, and the Saltchuk Code of Ethical Business Conduct.
  • Be a leader for “Speak Up, Take Action”, including encouraging peers and staff to exhibit a safe and ethical culture.
  • Provides direction and leadership to achieve company core values, mission, and safety vision.
  • Attends community events as required to represent the organization.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
  • Federal and state human resource legal issues including AAP/EEO laws and legal decisions, wage and hour laws, Fair Labor Standards Act, employment law, and ERISA.
  • Compensation and incentive pay practices and strategies.
  • Benefit trends, including legal issues. Benefit administration practices.
  • Disciplinary procedures and practices from progressive discipline to termination.
  • Effective training program methodologies.
  • Recruitment sources and proper interviewing skills.
  • Technology skills including all MS Applications, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Sharepoint, Teams, Learning Management System (Cornerstone), and ADP’s HRIS Suite.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • High business acumen.
  • Strong communications skills. Ability to communicate effectively at all levels of the organization in both written and verbal form.
  • Establishing trust to extend influence outside the chain of command.
  • Excellent listening skills to understand what the employee is really saying and responding appropriately.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks on an ongoing basis. Ability to organize and prioritize projects in a frequently changing environment.
  • Ability to maintain professional attitude, objectivity, sense of humor, and leadership skills during times of stress.
  • Problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to use personal computer and relevant software tools of the business.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

This position generally requires a bachelor’s degree in business/personnel management or other related fields such as employment law, labor relations, etc. Extensive HR management expertise with at least 5-7 years’ management experience preferred. General HR operational experience and specialized understanding of talent management, workforce planning, employee/labor relations, employment branding, payroll, benefits administration/compliance, compensation management, training and leadership development, and AAP/EEO requirements. SHRM-SCP, SHRM-CP, PHR or SPHR preferred.
