JOB/POSITION TITLE: Director of Human Resources

STATUS: Exempt

PRIMARY PURPOSE: The Director of Human Resourcesleads the Human Resources team and partners with Hawaiian Humane leadership to provide strategic vision and guidance as it relates to all aspects of Human Resources and organizational development. The Director of Human Resources works proactively with Hawaiian Humane leadership and staff and is responsible for developing, implementing and evaluating Human Resources policies, procedures, and best practices, and identifying and executing long-range strategic talent management goals.

Reports To: President & CEO

Supervises: HR Manager, HR Coordinator, volunteers as needed

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/FUNCTIONS:

Organizational Leadership.

  • Provides strategic input and council to the leadership team to set and maintain organizational vision, strategy, and execution. Translates the vision and direction of the organization into a human capital strategy in support of the Hawaiian Humane Society mission.
  • Partners and supports organizational commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, including serving as a leader in creating an inclusive work environment and organizational culture. Acts on initiatives for equal opportunity and serve as a leader in creating an inclusive work environment and organizational culture.
  • Builds productive working relationships with the executive team and other key members of the leadership team to best advise them on key organizational issues related to the attainment of business objectives.
  • Strategically develops, implements, and monitors operating fiscal plans and budgets with respect to HR operations, organization wide employee development, training/education, benefits, and compensation.
  • Coaches, develops and guides team members across Hawaiian Humane to help build a culture of growth, development, curiosity, and accountability.
  • Represents Hawaiian Humane externally to our animal welfare colleagues as a subject matter expert and industry leader.

Human Resources Leadership.

  • Leads a team of Human Resource professionals and oversees all activities surrounding talent acquisition, performance management, compensation, benefits administration, payroll, HR information systems, onboarding, training, unemployment, workers compensation, wellness, and safety.
  • Partners with Hawaiian Humane leaders on strategic workforce planning activities to include talent identification, coaching and development, equal opportunity for career advancement, training opportunities and succession activities.
  • Connects with people at all levels to build a strong culture, communicate effectively to diverse audiences, and manage organizational change.
  • Remedies escalated issues in the areas of policy, employee relations, coaching, corrective action/development plans, terminations, employment law, compensation, benefits, and talent management.
  • Manages the organizations staff safety programs and OSHA compliance, with support from other organizational departments.
  • Develops and delivers presentations and training through various modalities (in person, via a Learning Management System, etc.).
  • Conducts professional investigations as needed.
  • Manages external relationships with PEO's, consultants, and advisors to maximize Hawaiian Humane's compliance and best practices in all HR functional areas.
  • Reviews, evaluates, and updates policies in Employee Handbook as needed.
  • Utilizes HR technology and HRIS best-practices as they relate to data collection, dissemination, privacy, reporting, and analysis.
  • Manages and oversees human infectious disease protocol (COVID-19) for the organization.
  • Maintains knowledge of industry trends, laws, regulations, and best practices in employment law, Human Resources, and talent management.

OTHER DUTIES/FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

JOB CONDITIONS:

  • Working Conditions: Indoors and outdoors.
  • Equipment Use: Occasional use of Hawaiian Humane Society and personal vehicles. PC computer, digital camera, printer, copier, telephone.
  • Work Hours: Routine 40 hours per week, typical Monday through Friday schedule, with other hours based on operational requirements and special events.

MENTAL, PHYSICAL & COMMUNICATION DEMANDS:

  • Requires working with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to work under pressure of deadlines.
  • Must be able to work and communicate with people at all levels of the organization and people external to Hawaiian Humane.
  • Requires patience and tact when dealing with difficult, emotional or angry people.
  • Requires handling people and animals in a pleasant, courteous and professional manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion with confidential information.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

  • Advanced learning in Human Resources and/or PHR, SPHR, or SHRM-CP certifications.
  • Broad HR experience working in varied industries and organizations.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal rules and regulations pertaining to the management of a non-profit organization is preferred.
  • General understanding of the animal welfare industry and veterinary industry a plus.
  • Thorough working knowledge of federal and state statutes and regulations governing the employment relationship and human resource management theories and practices.
  • Excellent computer skills in use of internet and Microsoft Suite.
  • Experience with PEO partnerships a plus.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to prioritize the workload and complete multiple assignments with competing and conflicting deadlines.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills; able to problem solve a wide variety of issues and develop and deploy actions to continuously improve the organizations HR programs.

Education and Work Experience:

  • A bachelor's degree and three (3) years' experience of increasing responsibility as a Human Resources Manager in a broad range of HR functions OR
  • Five (5) years' experience of increasing responsibility as a generalist in a broad range of HR functions OR
  • Any appropriate combination of education and experience.
