Las Américas ASPIRA Academy is seeking a highly qualified, enthusiastic individual to serve as a Social Studies Teacher. The successful candidate will have excellent people skills, be self-motivated, have demonstrated ability to work well with children and adults. This position reports to the Assistant Head of School or Head of School. The teacher provides a teaches one or more classes of Social Studies to students in grades 8-12 and assists in other school programs and activities as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Teaches courses in Social Studies, history, geography, American Government, pollical science, or humanities to secondary students, utilizing a course of study adopted by the school.
- Participates in professional learning focused on improving instructional practice and delivering identified curriculum (i.e. AVID, AP course trainings, Kagan, SEL trainings, etc).
- Works closely with guidance/special education personnel/ outside resources to assist students with special needs.
- Encourages students to become aware of the complexity and interrelations of local, state, national and world problems.
- Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
- Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and in harmony with the goals, establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects and communicates these objectives to students.
- Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct and for the classroom; develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure.
- Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required.
- Evaluates pupils' academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records and prepares progress reports.
- Assesses the learning differences of students on a regular basis, seeking the assistance of appropriate staff as required.
- Maintains accurate, complete and correct records as required by law, district policy and administrative regulations.
- Is available to students and parents for education related purposes outside the instructional day.
- Bilingual skills are preferred.
Qualifications:
- Certified as a Secondary Social Studies Teacher by the State of Delaware
- Knowledge of Delaware Social Studies Standards, Assessment and Accountability
- Knowledge of best practices
- Excellent communication, organizational and computer skills
- Criminal background check
- Tuberculin testing and health verification
