A House Surgeon must have completed a General Surgery Residency Program or its equivalent and be credentialed by medical staff credentialing process as an Attending Surgeon in the Department of Surgery.
Responsibilities:- Immediately responsible for the care of all in-patients. His/her close evaluation with the Attending Staff is mandatory and essential.
- Consult with the Attending Staff whenever there is any question concerning diagnosis therapy or investigative procedures.
- In critical life threatening situations where time does not permit consultation, the House Surgeon must exercise “best judgment” and follow conventional form of therapy.
- In case of dire Emergency the House Surgeon may start a lifesaving procedure in the operating room while the on-call attending is on his way to the hospital.
- During his/her on-duty hours, the House Surgeon must remain in the hospital and be accessible by the paging system. If he/she is engaged in a procedure that prevents him/her from answering a page, alternative arrangements should be made before the procedure is started.
- After evaluation of a new admission, a thorough and detailed admission note should be written with differential diagnosis if applicable and plan of therapy.
- Recommendations from the Attending Physician and other consultants must be reported in the progress notes.
- The House Surgeon conducts daily rounds in the surgical service with the Physician Assistants. He countersigns all written notes and orders by the Physician Assistant.
- Answers consult from the Emergency Department during the day and during his/her tour at night and weekends.
- Prepare the operating room schedule assignment. Participate in major surgery in the operating room.
- Dictate all operative reports on cases that he/she assisted in operation or in surgical procedure.
- Perform other duties as required.
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO).
- Must have completed General Surgery residency program.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Additional languages preferred.
- Maintains regulatory requirements, including all state, federal and JCAHO regulations.
- Maintains and ensures patient confidentiality at all times.
- Participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities.
- Computer knowledge to effectively utilize the electronic medical records.
- Licensed and currently registered in New York State.
- Involves standing, walking, sitting, lifting and talking.
- May include some repetitive motions.
