SUMMARY
The mission of the Horticultural Pest and Disease Control Board is to effectively control and prevent the spread of horticultural pests and diseases pursuant to RCW 15.09.060 in Franklin County.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB
This position is serves as a bridge between our organization and the local community.
- Research and identify fruit tree pests and diseases that affect the orchard industry.
- Identify residential fruit-bearing trees and interact with property owners.
- Provide guidance and assistance to residents on fruit tree care, when needed.
- Document residential fruit trees for tracking and follow up.
- Understand the Tree Replacement Program to share with merchants and residents.
- Place, monitor and manage insect traps as needed.
- Use navigation programs/apps such as GPS systems and Field Maps.
- Keep accurate records.
- Assist team when necessary on projects.
- Interact with the general public using courtesy, tact, and discretion.
Typical Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- General interest in horticulture with understanding of basic gardening principles.
- Research and identify pests and diseases that affect the orchard industry.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to safely operate and maintain work vehicles.
- Ability to write and speak clearly and concisely, to express ideas and recommendations effectively orally and in writing, and communicate department, technical, or industry information, policies, requirements, and procedures in a language understood by co-workers and the general public.
- Ability and willingness to establish and maintain communication and working relationships with peers, representatives from other agencies, vendors, public officials, and the general public using courtesy, tact, and discretion.

- Outside in various elements including.
- Office environment.
- The person in this position must be able to:
- Occasionally lift up to 35 pounds.
- Maintain composure in stressful situations such as exposure to dogs, snakes, unfriendly property owners, biting/stinging insects and hazardous plants.
- Utilize close up vision to read a map or utilize GPS application such as Google Maps.
- Traverse various terrains including gravel roads, hills, tall grass, and mud.
- Drive County vehicle with frequent entering/exiting of the vehicle.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Cover Letter Required.
- Valid driver’s license is required.
- Employment at Franklin County is contingent upon the results of a background check and eligibility for coverage by the County’s liability insurance carrier. Depending upon the position, background checks may include personal and professional references, social security verification, education and professional licensing verification, financial history, and criminal history.
