Duties and Responsibilities
- Recruiting and retention
- Teach music to 6th - 12th grade
- Introduce fundamental playing and music techniques, and music reading skills
- Four Seasonal Concerts
- Solo and Ensemble Festival
- Annual regional large group festivals
Secondary Course Offerings
- 6th Grade Beginning Band* (two sections)
- 7th Grade Band
- 8th Grade Band
- 9th through 12th Grade Band and Percussion
- Jazz Band during 0 Period
*Possible other music electives
Assisting Teacher
- Collaborate and assist with 6-12 choir teacher and high school drama teacher
- Sectional rehearsals
- Solo and Ensemble coaching
- Concerts
- Share supervision and preparation for music events
Qualification Requirements
- Minimum of a bachelor's degree with a K-12 instrumental music endorsement
- Must qualify for a Washington State Teaching Certificate
- Ability to team teach selected courses
- Ability to maintain positive, productive classroom environment
- Ability to plan and implement appropriate teaching strategies to meet curriculum requirements
- Possess strong academic and experiential background in teaching music with an emphasis on Washington K-12 Music Standards
- Knowledge and ability to teach varied musical styles
- Ability to maintain positive rapport with students
- Knowledge and ability to use motivational and team building skills
- Strong communication skills; written, interpersonal
- Minor instrument repair and maintenance skill
- Ability to develop and advise student leadership
- Must qualify for and maintain a valid Washington State driver's license
- Knowledge and ability to incorporate Educational technologies such as Google Suite (Classroom, Slides, Sheets, Forms etc.) Nearpod and screencasts, various marching programs
- Knowledge and ability to incorporate Music technologies such as SmartMusic, Sibelius, Garage Band, Tone Savvy
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Plans, develops, implements and assesses courses of instruction consistent with district approved curriculum and Washington State K-12 Music Standards
- Arrange transportation, lodging and meals for out of town events. Accompany and supervise students on out of district trips
- Support and advise Hoquiam Band & Choir Backers Booster Club (Band and Choir)
- Manage Choir budget effectively and communicatively (budgets, ASB fundraisers etc.)
- Maintain current inventory of all fixed assets within the music department
- Oversee process of checking out, cleaning, repairing and storing all band equipment
- Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing
- Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals and teachers
- Establish performance requirements, enforce academic requirements
- Able to use a variety of instructional strategies and methods to ensure a high level of student academic achievement
- Able to promote high expectations, demonstrate a caring attitude and establish an environment that supports high achievement in students
- Uses positive and productive techniques for improving student behavior and manages the classroom efficiently and effectively.
- Incorporates the teaching of music and the student application of higher order thinking skills as major components of the instructional program
- Uses current technology appropriately as part of the learning environment
- Reports regularly to parents and is responsive to parental concerns
- Enforces school rules, manages student behavior, and maintains student attendance, conduct and academic performance records
- Actively participates as a team member with faculty, staff and administration in reaching educational goals
- Is enthusiastic, flexible and committed to students reaching high learning standards
- Able to maintain inventory records of classroom texts, and other district owned instruments and materials
- Evaluate students' interests, aptitudes and physical characteristics to determine suitable instruments for beginners
- Sing and play instruments to demonstrate music techniques (ex.piano, guitar)
- Instruct students in music theory, composition, reading music, sight-reading, and aesthetic appreciation, instrumental and vocal techniques
- Conducts group rehearsals and instructs and coaches members in their parts, in fundamentals of musicianship, and ensemble performance
- Critiques performances to identify errors and reinforce correct techniques
- Lead ensembles in regular and special performances for school programs, community activities, concerts, and festivals. (sports, parades, Veterans Day Assembly)
- Creativity in Fundraising Efforts through School ASB and Music Boosters Group to enhance travel, equipment and award's budgets
