Job description

JOB SUMMARY:
Provide LANGUAGE ARTS instruction in a HIGH SCHOOL setting. Assist students in the fulfillment of their potential for intellectual, physical, emotional, and psychological growth and maturation.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Knowledge of: Demonstrated knowledge of current LANGUAGE ARTS standards and differentiated instructional strategies applicable to subject.
Skilled in: Lesson plan development, implementation of learning activities, behavior management, assessment, and teaching to individual student skill levels.
Ability to: Ability and desire to work as a part of a team that puts students' needs first and foremost. A desire to grow professionally and be involved in staff development opportunities at the building and district level. Ability to establish and maintain positive working relations with staff, students, and parents with the ability to communicate effectively.
Experience: Experience preferred but not required.
Education: Completion of a higher education bachelor's degree or master's degree in education/ teaching.
Certification Required: A valid teaching license with LANGUAGE ARTS endorsement issued by the Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  1. Meet and instruct assigned classes in the locations and times as designated.
  2. Plan a program of study that meets the interests, needs, and abilities of the students and follow established curriculum as written by the district and the state.
  3. Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and is appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
  4. Prepare for classes assigned and show written evidence of preparation upon request of the supervisor.
  5. Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media consistent within the limitations of the location and resources provided by the district.
  6. Establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents concerning the academic and behavioral progress of the students.
  7. Cooperate with other members of the staff.
  8. Attend staff meetings and other meetings as required.
  9. Strive to maintain and improve professional competence.
  10. Assist the administration in implementing all policies and rules of the school and district.
  11. Assess the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and maintain such records as required by law and district policy.
  12. Take all reasonable precautions to provide for the health and safety of the students and to protect equipment, materials, and facilities.
  13. Perform other duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Language Skills: Ability to read English and comprehend complex technical language. Ability to write memoranda, correspondence, lessons plans, reports, and student achievement summaries in English. Ability to effectively present information in one-to-one and small group situations.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations with a high degree of accuracy.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense to carry out detailed, but basic, written, or oral instructions in English. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to work collaboratively and establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisor(s), staff, students, parents, and community.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk and may be continuously required to stand. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk while performing the duties of this job. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp tools. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. The employee may be required to sit at a desk and use a computer for long periods of time.

Works in a school environment. Able to use a telephone, operate a computer, and use other office equipment. Able to drive to other program sites and meetings.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Salary and work year in accordance with negotiated agreement between licensed teachers and the district.
CLASSIFICATION/LOCATION: Licensed, Temporary, Full-Time at Newberg High School for the remainder of the 2023 -2024 school year.
CALENDAR/BENEFITS: 8 hours per day, starting as soon as possible, working the number of contract days remaining in 190 day contract for 2023-2024 school year.
Salary range according to the 2023-2024 Licensed Salary Schedule $46,642 - $95,909 prorated by the number of days remaining in the contract. Newberg School District pays 6% PERS contribution, provides a generous insurance cap, long-term disability, and life insurance. Optional Life, AD&D insurance, Short Term Disability, Tax Shelter Annuities, Section 125 health and dependent care accounts, Tuition Reimbursement, Professional Development and Employee Assistance Program through Uprise Behavioral Health available to all staff. Coaching opportunities are also available.
