JOB DESCRIPTION – HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH TEACHER
Title:High School English Teacher
Reports To:High School Principal
SUMMARY OF POSITION, FUNCTION, AND DUTIES
Under the High School Principal’s direction, the High School English Teacher is assigned to fulfill the mission of honoring the Lord Jesus Christ which is to equip students with a love for Christ, a passion to learn, the courage to lead, and a commitment to serve. Sarasota Christian School is seeking a dynamic, talented, and experienced English teacher to join our team as a full-time faculty member in the High School. This position is responsible for teaching sections of American
Literature and World Literature. SCS requires strong teaching skills, a deep understanding of High School students, knowledge of best practices in pedagogy, flexibility, and the ability to collaborate closely with members of the department, administration, colleagues, and parents. SCS teachers are committed to teaching students through a Christian lens. The school administration may assign additional duties or specify other functions needed as may be appropriate for specific faculty posts.
ESSENTIAL JOB QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
PERSONAL BELIEF & BEHAVIOR
- Must be a born-again Christian whose lifestyle and character demonstrate obedience to God and the Bible and express agreement with the school's doctrinal viewpoints, statement of faith, and Christian lifestyle requirements.
- Must be able to serve as a positive Christian role model to others in the school context.
- Must be able to accept and support the school's core beliefs, statement of faith, and doctrine.
- Must have an understanding of and commitment to SCS's educational objectives and philosophy of education.
- Must possess sufficient biblical knowledge that enables the individual to integrate Scripture into subjects taught, sports coached, or other job duties assigned, thus imparting to students a biblical worldview position.
- Must faithfully attend a local church whose fundamental beliefs are in agreement with the statement of faith and doctrine of this school.
- Must affirm that he/she believes that working and ministering in this Christian school would be pleasing to God, would be consistent with his/her purpose in life, and would be good stewardship of his/her time, talent, and professional abilities.
- Must enjoy working with young people.
PROFESSIONAL
- Bachelor’s Degree or higher (a degree in Education and/or subject field is preferred)
- Experience teaching English at this grade level
- Excellent verbal communication skills and organizational skills
- Outstanding written skills for communication and documentation
- Knowledge about and experience with student developmental, social, emotional and cognitive needs
- Empathy and understanding for High School age students
- Ability to work successfully with colleagues on a team
- Flexibility, tact, and grace in talking with parents

RESPONSIBILITIES
- Providing excellent instruction by fostering a nurturing, challenging, and supportive classroom environment that emphasizes mutual respect, advances students in their English education, and inspires students toward a lifelong love of learning.
- The active pursuit of professional development in the areas of pedagogy, teaching techniques, and technology relevant to the field and subject in order to provide students with a learning experience of the highest quality.
- Monitoring and reporting on the performance of students and coordinating with administration, teachers, and parents to address concerns and correct problems should they arise.
- Implementing lesson plans effectively.
- Supervising students when in your care.
- Interacting appropriately with parents.
- Attending school, professional development, and faculty meetings.
