Job description

Butler Academy is seeking the world's most amazing English Teachers for the 2024-25 school year in hopes of pushing our Excellence to the next level.

Great English teachers are passionate. They're passionate about books, literature, theatre, film, and their classes. They're people to be reckoned with, people with opinions, people you can't ignore. They're people who students want to listen to and ask questions of. They're amazing storytellers. Text maniacs. They love the process of teaching: they like its creative opportunities. They like listening to students talking, like watching their drama, reading their stories. Great English teachers get nervous on the day of exam results. They don't need to, but they do. It's a sign of their concern that their students should do well in exams, as well as enjoy their subject. It's a sign also of their accountability. They don't blame their students if a result is disappointing: they live the exams along with their students. They are, quite simply, great teachers in an age when great teachers very hard to come by. (adapted from G. Barton)

If that is you, or who you aspire to be, then we have a place for you at BA! At Butler Academy, or BA for short, we’re committed to building something extraordinary, and we won’t settle for anything less than the most talented, innovative, passionate, and committed educators we can find. Our goal is to engage teachers who are committed to closing the achievement gap by making BA a dynamic learning environment where every child is genuinely embraced and uplifted.

Becoming a great teacher takes continuous practice and a commitment to personal growth in tandem with a school culture that truly embraces a growth-for-all mindset. To facilitate this, BA teachers will receive real-time coaching and participate in meaningful weekly feedback and observation sessions with trained instructional coaches.

Our Model:

  • BA operates on a modified year-round calendar and will serve grades K – 8 for the 2024-25 school year, adding a grade each subsequent year until we are K – 12
  • Our 8th graders will be taking English I and we're looking for a teacher that can teach this class (and others) and grow with us as we add grades 9 - 12.
  • Middle school consists of grades 5 - 8 at BA.
  • Avergage class size for English is 14 scholars
  • We place strong emphasis on social-emotional learning
  • We value rigor and exceptionally high expectations in addition to differentiated support to meet the needs of all scholars

As part of your commitment, we ask that you:

  • Embody Butler Academy’s mission, vision, and core values.
  • Implement our adopted standards-aligned curricula with fidelity.
  • Provide engaging, differentiated, appropriately paced, and rigorous instruction in whole-class, small group, and individual settings.
  • Establish and maintain a culture of growth and achievement in your classroom.
  • Lead SEL-based Morning Meetings with your scholars each day.
  • Uphold school-wide and class policies, rules and consequences at all times.
  • Analyze student achievement data with colleagues, instructional coaches, and leadership team members to strategically respond to the learning needs of your scholars.
  • Use data to inform instructional development and delivery.

What you’ll need:

  • Bachelor’s degree (conferred by July 1)
  • SC Teacher certification (or transferrable certification from another state)
  • An enthusiastic approach towards weekly coaching and feedback conversations
  • A strong belief that all scholars can succeed; regardless of their race, class, or gender
  • An ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
  • A commitment to constant professional growth and development
  • Preference: experience and demonstrated success working with underserved students
  • Priority screening: applicants who include a cover letter describing why they're a good fit for our school
