JOB DESCRIPTION:
GINYC seeks a Counselor Advocate for our DYCD Compass High School program at The Urban Assembly Institute of Math & Science for Young Women. The Counselor Advocate plays a crucial role in supporting and guiding High School students within the program. As a High School Counselor Advocate, you will work closely with students, families, and school staff to ensure a positive and supportive environment for academic success and personal development.
The Counselor Advocate is responsible for identifying suitable curricula through a trauma-informed, social emotional lens, helping staff to create activity plans, supporting curriculum development and training, overseeing implementation of program activities, fostering continuous quality improvement, and building productive relationships with the school attended by program participants. Duties include:
Counseling and Guidance:
- Provide individual and group counseling sessions to High School students, addressing academic, personal, and social development needs.
- Collaborate with students to set academic and personal goals and create action plans to achieve them.
- Conduct assessments and evaluations to identify potential barriers to academic success and develop strategies to overcome them.
Advocacy and Support:
- Advocate for students within the school and community to ensure they have access to necessary resources and support services.
- Assist students in navigating challenges related to attendance, behavior, and academic performance.
- Work closely with teachers, administrators, and parents to create a supportive network for students.
College and Career Guidance:
- Provide guidance on post-secondary education options, career exploration, and the college application process.
- Assist students in developing resumes, preparing for interviews, and exploring internship and job opportunities.
- Organize workshops and informational sessions to educate students and parents on college and career readiness.
Collaboration with Community Partners:
- Establish and maintain partnerships with community organizations, businesses, and higher education institutions to expand opportunities for students.
- Coordinate with external resources to provide additional support services, mentorship, and enrichment programs.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain accurate and confidential student records, documenting counseling sessions, interventions, and progress.
- Prepare reports and assessments to track student outcomes and program effectiveness.
Professional Development:
- Stay informed about current trends in education, counseling, and youth development.
- Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance counseling skills and stay abreast of best practices.
Qualifications:
- The Counselor Advocate must have at least 2 years’ successful experience working with individual students and school personnel, external service providers and parents or guardians.
- Bachelor’s degree required. Master's degree preferred, in Counseling, School Psychology, or a related field.
- Previous experience working with High School students in a counseling or advocacy role, required.
- State licensure or certification in school counseling, preferred.
- Knowledge of the NYC public school system, college admissions processes, and career development resources, preferred.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders, including students, families, educators, and community partners.
- Effective problem solving and conflict resolution skills that follow youth development principles.
Successful candidates will demonstrate the following competencies through a combination of education and experience:

- Prioritize appropriately and act in keeping with priorities.
- Able to identify and address inhibitors to progress.
- Expertise with office technologies, especially Microsoft Office, spreadsheets, and internet resources such as Google docs
Communication Skills
- Motivating and inspirational verbal presentation style
- Ability to encourage genuine and respectful communication among program participants.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as seen in communications with students, parents, and partners.

HOURS: The High School Counselor Advocate is a full-time position. Must be available to work Monday through Friday from 10:00am – 6:00pm, with flexibility for some nights and weekend hours.
COMPENSATION: $50,000 - $55,000 Annually. GINYC offers a generous benefits package, including healthcare insurance (medical and dental), retirement savings plan, paid time off, and employee assistance program (EAP).
