The High School AP History Teacher is responsible for instructing students in Advanced Placement-level history courses, fostering critical thinking, analytical skills, and a deep understanding of historical events. The teacher will create a stimulating and challenging learning environment that prepares students for success in the AP History exam while instilling a passion for the subject.
Key Responsibilities:
- Curriculum Development:
- Design and implement a comprehensive curriculum aligned with the College Board's AP History framework.
- Develop lesson plans, instructional materials, and assessments that meet the unique needs of AP-level students.
- Stay updated on historical scholarship, emerging trends, and changes to the AP History exam to ensure curriculum relevance.
- Effective Instruction:
- Deliver engaging and dynamic lessons that promote critical thinking, historical analysis, and effective communication skills.
- Utilize a variety of instructional strategies, technologies, and resources to accommodate diverse learning styles and foster a supportive learning environment.
- Provide timely and constructive feedback on student work to facilitate growth and improvement.
- Student Assessment:
- Administer and grade assessments, projects, and exams, ensuring alignment with AP exam expectations.
- Analyze student performance data to identify areas of strength and weakness, adapting instructional strategies accordingly.
- Prepare students for the AP History exam through targeted review sessions and practice exams.
- Classroom Management:
- Establish and maintain a positive and inclusive classroom culture that promotes respect, collaboration, and intellectual curiosity.
- Effectively manage classroom behavior, creating a conducive learning environment that encourages student participation and engagement.
- Communication and Collaboration:
- Communicate regularly with students, parents, and colleagues regarding student progress, assignments, and classroom activities.
- Collaborate with other teachers, department members, and school leadership to align curriculum, share best practices, and contribute to the overall success of the history department.
- Professional Development:
- Pursue opportunities for professional development to stay current with best practices in history education, pedagogy, and assessment.
- Participate in departmental meetings, workshops, and conferences to contribute to the continuous improvement of the history program.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in History or related field (Master's degree preferred).
- Teaching certification and/or relevant state credentials.
- Extensive knowledge of the subject matter, particularly in the area of the AP History course being taught.
- Previous experience teaching AP History courses is highly desirable.
- Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
