Alaska Crane is a subsidiary of STG Incorporated (herein referred to as "STG" or "Company") that performs call-out and contract crane services using cranes ranging from 38-ton boom trucks to 660-ton crawlers.
What can you expect?
As the seasonal Heavy Equipment Mechanic, you are responsible for operating variety of equipment, including hoists, lifts, overhead cranes, hand tools and other various instruments on a wide variety of short-term construction jobs and extended term projects. You must be highly skilled and experienced in working with a wide variety of cranes, Heavy Equipment, as well as smaller company vehicles.
How Will You Do It?
You will use your knowledge and related experience to:

  • Supervise and direct Shop Assistant and assign specific duties and act as a mentor.
  • Trouble-shoot and inspect equipment to diagnose malfunctions.
  • Repair heavy construction vehicles and equipment such cranes, boom trucks, trailers pick-ups, lowboys, lube trucks, and other Heavy Equipment.
  • Adjust, repair, or overhaul engines and various components of engines.
  • Operate hoists, lifts, overhead cranes, hand tools and various other instruments to perform work safely and effectively.
  • Complete routine maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
  • Clean, maintain and organize equipment, tools, and general work area.
  • Prepare and maintain inventory of supplies and equipment.
  • Provide instruction and training on the proper methods and processes to perform equipment repair, inspection, and preventative maintenance to other staff.
  • Comply with company policy and procedures on purchasing and ordering of parts/supplies.
  • Maintain accurate service logs and records of maintenance, utilizing paper files and electronic maintenance software.
  • Must have own tools to complete job duties and responsibilities.
  • Maintain consistent and punctual attendance.
  • Work as a "team-player" with co-workers in a respectful and supportive manner.
  • Seek and participate in development and training opportunities.
  • Perform routine welding and fabrication work on Heavy Equipment as needed.
  • Duty to conduct oneself in the best interest of the company while on the job or representing STG.
  • Report any incident, situation or activity that may affect the company's ability to operate safely, ethically, and profitably to the company Safety Manager.
  • Act as a team member and mentor to less experienced laborers.
  • Maintain any required certifications mandatory by law or company policy.
  • Work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Abilities you must have to be successful:
  • Intermediate knowledge of machines and tools, including design, use, repair, and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of Heavy Equipment operation and maintenance procedures and processes.
  • Working knowledge of manuals, schematics, and diagnostics tools.
  • Knowledge of safe and responsible operation of tools and equipment used in vehicle maintenance and repairs.
  • Skills in examining, trouble shooting, and diagnosing mechanical issues.
  • Skills in operating a computer, utilizing a variety of applicable software programs.
  • Math skills include adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing in all units of measurement, including common fractions, whole numbers, and decimals.
  • Skill in organizing resources, establishing priorities, meeting deadlines and general time management.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, regulations, instruction manuals, blueprints, and specifications.
  • Observe safety and security procedures; determine appropriate action beyond guidelines; report potentially unsafe conditions; use equipment and materials properly.
  • Provide own tools for work related purposes.
  • Write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Supervise and train assigned staff, including organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
  • Work in a team environment, take direction from supervisor(s), high degree of attention to details, follow work rules, and adhere to project schedule.
  • Work productively under pressure. Strong self-motivation and work ethic; ability to work with or without direct supervision.
  • Participate in group meetings.
  • Ability to obtain various manufacture certifications.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
This position supervises the Alaska Crane Shop Assistant in conjunction with Operations Manager and has a responsibility for working cooperatively with other department staff and management.
Who Is STG Inc. Looking For?
Required Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Minimum of 5 (five) years of experience in Heavy Equipment repair and maintenance in the construction field.
  • Rigger/ Signal level 1 preferred, must obtain within 6 (six) months of employment.
  • Prior welding experience required.
  • Current DOT Medical Card required.
  • Advanced knowledge of the working components of Heavy Equipment engines and mechanisms, hydraulics, and computers.
  • Work related experience using Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, Word).
  • Must have a valid Class A commercial driver's license and be qualified to operate a vehicle under the conditions of STG's Driving Policy.
  • Travel to remote locations for work-related purposes (up to 30% of time) is required; must meet attendance requirements and work a flexible schedule as needed.
  • Ability to pass a drug and background screening.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Vocational or technical training in Heavy Equipment preferred.
