Job description

DEFINITION
Under the direction of the Director of Transportation, organize and coordinate the maintenance and repair of district vehicles and equipment; perform journey-level mechanical work in the inspection, diagnosis, repair and maintenance of a variety of heavy and light district vehicles and equipment including gasoline, diesel and alternate fuel powered equipment; train and provide work direction to assigned staff.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
1. Check buses for conformance to Highway Patrol standards.
2. Inspect, diagnose, repair and rebuild mechanical defects in all district vehicles which may include: engines, transmissions, drive shafts, other mechanical, electrical, ignition, and computer-related systems, carburetors, brake systems, steering, suspension and components.
3. Determine repair needs and recommend possible use of private repair facilities.
4. Lubricate and service all district vehicles.
5. Operate diesel and gasoline school buses, trucks, vans, forklift, skiploader, drill press, steam cleaner, wheel balancer and other hand and power tools.
6. Maintain records related to repairs made and time worked.
7. Requisition parts, tools and tires as needed for all district vehicles.
8. Write specifications for new buses and inspect upon arrival.
9. Plan and implement a preventive maintenance program.
10. Work with and around hazardous materials and may be required to participate in emergency cleanup of hazardous waste or material spills.
11. Function as the Hazardous Materials Control and Waste Management representative for the department by maintaining proper records.
12. May be required to drive a school bus to a location outside the transportation yard and perform emergency bus driving duties as required.
13. Subject to responding to emergency calls after hours and on weekends relating to the transportation program.
14. Prioritize and assign work to assigned staff.
15. Provide input to the Transportation Director in the evaluation of assigned staff.
16. Perform arc and gas welding and cutting; fabricate braces, fittings and parts unavailable due to age or structure.
17. Make road tests as needed.
18. Maintain the general appearance of the buses; perform minor sheet metal work and paint as required.
19. Do the repairs from the Driver's Daily Reports and Work Orders.
20. Install windows in vehicles and repair broken and torn seats of all district vehicles.
21. Maintain shop area, equipment and tools in a safe, clean and orderly condition.
22. Basic computer operation.
23. Perform related duties as assigned.
Knowledge of:
1. Principals of internal combustion and diesel engines.
2. Laws and regulations pertaining to school bus maintenance and operations, including the California Motor Vehicle Code, Education Code and Administrative Code.
3. Safe work practices and procedures.
4. Operation of diagnostic tools and equipment.
5. Preventive maintenance methods.
6. Record keeping methods.
7. Safe driving practice.
8. Regulations pertaining to hazardous materials and Control and Waste Management.
9. Methods, tools, equipment and procedures used in the overhaul, repair, adjustment and maintenance of automotive equipment and of fuel, ignition, electrical and cooling systems. 10. Techniques and practices of maintenance and repair of heavy and light vehicles and grounds maintenance equipment.
11. Diagnostic procedures for vehicles and equipment.
12. Technical aspects of field of specialty.
13. Shop math applicable to vehicle maintenance.

24. Keep abreast of changes in the field; attend shop meetings, activities and appropriate technical schools.
Licenses:
Possession of a valid California Commercial Driver's License Class B with "Air Brake" and "Passenger" endorsements and the ability to meet and maintain qualification for District vehicle insurance coverage.
Training and Experience:
Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school and one year of journeylevel experience in the repair and maintenance of alternate fuel powered equipment, gas- and diesel-powered vehicles.
Working Conditions:
1. Work is performed in an inside-outside shop environment with frequent exposure to weather, constant exposure to moderate to very loud noise; frequent exposure to dust, fumes (such as sulfuric acid, solvents, and ether), impact wrench vibrations, and moving mechanical parts; some exposure to high, exposed places such as on top of buses and other Heavy Duty equipment.
2. Work requires lifting 50 - 70 pounds, climbing and crawling, frequent demand for lifting 30 pounds and use of full range of well-developed physical capabilities, including hearing sound of engines and using sense of smell to detect fumes.
3. Pulling, pushing, lifting and carrying heavy objects.
4. Walking or standing for extended periods.
5. Bending at the waist.
6. Kneeling.
7. Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally.
8. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer terminal, power tools and equipment.
9. Working in a cramped or restrictive work chamber.
10. Working around and with machinery having moving parts.
11. Must be able to stoop, crawl, lift and twist.
12. Must have full rotation of upper body.
13. Must have full rotation of hands, wrists, and arms.
14. Must be able to adequately reach brake, clutch and accelerator pedals.
15. Must have sufficient vision to read written instructions and to observe and perform repairs.
16. Must be able to perform manual labor.
CHARACTERISTICS: Agility and strength commensurate with the duties of the class; honesty; industry; initiative; dependability and good judgment in conjunction with position duties; loyalty, desire to serve, and other related qualities. Sufficient stamina, dexterity and mobility to operate a variety of equipment, travel from site to site and move to various work locations. Sufficient hearing and speech to comprehend office conversation and to communicate orally in a clear, understandable manner. Work is performed in various locations, including on-site at schools.
