POSITION SUMMARY
The Health Information Technician is responsible for the maintenance, filing, retrieval, and destruction of client Health Information documents retained by Horizon in all existing and acquired Health Information systems and formats utilized by Horizon. The technician is responsible for assigned Health Information duties including management, receipt, secure storage, and accurate interpretation and use of the contents of client Health Information documents created, stored, and received by Horizon. The position collaborates with Horizon clients, substitute authorized or appointed decision makers for clients, internal Horizon staff including medical providers, clinicians, case manager, nurses, and all levels of management and administrative personnel. The technician is also responsible for responding to and collaborating with any other authorized external individual or entity as appropriate such as, but not limited to healthcare providers, hospitals, schools, attorneys, courts, managed care organizations, insurance companies, state and federal offices and agencies, and vendors.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- High School diploma required; prefer Associate’s degree in Business/Medical or Health Information Management, Electronic Health Records or Informatics Certification.
- Minimum one (1) year of general office work experience with emphasis on using computer software, including Microsoft Office and scanning, or an equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Prefer two (2) years of experience working in a medical office setting.
RELATED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems; Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words; Knowledge of electronic equipment, and computer hardware and software, including applications used for information technology as well as producing reports as needed from such; Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service – this includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction to meet demands of both internal and external entities for Health Information records and related client data and reporting; Ability to promote positive, collaborative and professional working relations among coworkers and external customers at all levels; Knowledge of current requirements of Horizon Behavioral Health policies and procedures, state and federal laws and regulations pertaining to the privacy and confidentiality of client records including but not limited to 45-CFR, HIPAA, Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HI-TECH) Act, CARES Act, Public Law 114-255 (3-12-21), 42 CFR Part 2 – Confidentiality of Substance Use Disorder Patient Records, Code of VA §32.1-127.1:03 – Health records privacy , Virginia Human Rights Regulations (HRR), Code of VA §37.2-400, and other applicable state and federal laws pertaining to client or Health Information privacy and security; Ability to use word processing, managing files and records, typing/keyboarding and other office procedures and terminology; Ability to meet productivity standards set for Health Information Technicians; Willing and available to work modified schedules (weekends, holiday, etc.) as required; Ability to drive and must possess a valid driver’s license; May be required to travel to different Horizon worksites during the day based on operational needs or provide admin support at other locations; Regular attendance at trainings and Horizon meetings may require travel to a variety of Horizon sites.
