Enso Village is a Zen-inspired community with a focus on mindful aging, the joys of nature, sustainability and contemplative life and care for adults 60+. Enso Village is a collaboration between the Kendal Corporation, a nationally recognized organization for senior living, and the San Francisco Zen Center.

The Role
You have devoted time to your inner life and your outer life reflects stillness, non-judgment and considered communication. You have studied one or many spiritual paths and you artfully balance commitment to one path while appreciating many paths. You love including people and helping them find a different type of awareness, and you are frequently sought to do so. You have developed inclusive teachings that focus on creating and maintaining integrity, kindness, connection and beneficial action. People love to partner with you as your mind is open, nimble and always beginning. Develops and implements the Spiritual Life program for Enso Village residents inspired by Zen practices and principles, partnering with Care, Nourishment and Wellness leaders to design integrated and inspiring programs. Assures that Contemplative Care is taught to the residents and team members. Deepens the understanding of and alignment to elevating interactions with the self and fellow humans, animals, and the earth. Establishes wonderful community relationships and encourages residents' involvement, too. Acts actively to model and reinforce ever-evolving care approaches. Develops deeply meaningful relationships across the Enso Village leadership team and encourages appropriate introspection. Elevates, nurtures and brings in new ideas all the time, and ensures healthy interactions between residents and the team, in partnership with the People leader.
Position Responsibilities:
Serves as curator and champion of Enso Village Spiritual Life, integrating interdisciplinary philosophies with the guiding principles of both Enso and Kendal Corp and assessing the ongoing authenticity of the Zen inspiration:
  • Establishes an enduring vision of Spiritual Life for the Residents at Enso.
  • Designs content and delivers wisdom teachings on the practices of mindful aging.
  • Oversees the development of Contemplative Care intention within the Enso community and seeks ways and methods to manifest those intentions through teachings/trainings.
  • Creates various avenues for spiritual support through the aging process, including items such as Five Wishes Documents and memorial practices.
  • Ensures that Spiritual Life practices and programs honor a broad inter-discipline of faiths, beliefs, values, and convictions; seeks common themes and practices to weave through Enso Village Spiritual Life.
  • Imparts a sense of honor and wonder through teaching, training, and cross-functional partnerships.

Participates in cross-functional collaboration with Enso leaders on various projects and programs to ensure alignment with Spiritual Life concepts and vision:
  • Collaborates extensively with the Leader of Resident Experience, defining and refining the Care and Care Support trainings to create novel and effective standards of service
  • Collaborates with the Inspirement Leader to support the design and effectiveness of non-clinical offerings that focus specifically on holistic well-being approaches
  • Acts in an advisory capacity on certain resident-facing policies (for example, pet policy) to help ensure gentle, harmonious approaches focused on honoring all sentient beings
  • Acts in an advisory capacity regarding food and meals, providing guidance on intentional food and meal management, including sharing thoughts on mindful reduction of consumption and waste of animal products
  • Organizes silent dining space and regularly rotates through various spaces to offer a balance of silence, conversation, warm-hearted engagement and support as needed

Partners with the Resident Experience team to promote the highest quality in palliative care and end-of-life services:
  • Works closely with the Leader of Resident Experience to review care and care support strategies and approaches, working to infuse these approaches with mindfulness and zen-inspired principles
  • Incorporates contemporary practices that aid in life transition, partnering with services such as Home Health and Hospice agencies

Oversees the inspirational events and teachings, establishing Enso Village as a premier (and novel) residential living entity:
  • Sets direction and vision for ongoing teachings and trainings for Enso, partnering cross-functionally

Serves as one voice of many as the Enso team seeks to refine, amplify and advance its inspiration circle amongst residents, team members and the community:
  • Supervisors the Spiritual Life Coordinator (Zendo Coordinator) to establish goals and assess performance; responsible for enacting alignment with the organization policies and procedures, as outlined in the Team Handbook
  • Oversees the Resident Volunteer program to derive multiple and meaningful ways to support purpose and autonomy, particularly encouraging community involvement
  • Seeks opportunities to support historically marginalized communities
  • Honors all beings

Provides periodic Spiritual Life wellness reports, partnering with leadership team to determine metrics and assessment levers:
  • Serves on the Leadership team to devise and track KPIs that effectively assess team performance as aligned to the organization's mission and guiding principles
  • Makes recommendations on how to assess effectiveness on Spiritual Life teachings on enhancing and elevating the aging process and resident experience at Enso Village
  • Collects and interprets feedback from residents and program participants, incorporating viable suggestions for revision as appropriate
  • Partners with leadership team to define methods for assessing effectiveness of Enso village team trainings, ensuring continuing authenticity
  • Serves as one of several resources to Board of Directors on matters related to Residential Spiritual Life and the promise inherent in Zen-bases spiritual living
  • May participate in Leadership discussion on allegiance to core cultural and value artifacts and partners with the CEO and People Leader, as legally appropriate, to assess alignment to these artifacts

Performs other duties as required.
Position Requirements
  • A Bachelor's degree in Theology, Psychology, Religious Studies or other field is preferred but not required.
  • A minimum of 10 years' experience in chaplaincy or theological teachings and spiritual practice.
  • Residential training is preferred.
  • Spanish fluency or the willingness to gain functional proficiency is required.
  • Fluency in a wide variety of theological and inter-disciplinary practices.
  • Experience leading guided, semi-guided and un-guided meditation sittings of various lengths, in various settings, with a particular openness to incorporating other traditions and ideas into the Spiritual Life experience of Enso Village Residents.
  • Must demonstrate unimpeachable values and integrity and must have proven skill at building, sustaining and deepening interpersonal connections.
  • We are very open to a diverse set of skills and life experiences. A combination of experience, practical training and education may substitute.

Physical Requirements
  • Long periods of sitting, with the occasional need to walk and stand
  • Ability to lift up to 10 pounds
  • Close visual acuity to view a computer terminal, analyze reports, manage data and detail

Compensation and Benefits
Enso Village is committed to equal pay and transparency. The annual base salary range for this position is $90,000-$115,000. This salary range provided as a general guideline and compensation decisions are dependent on a variety of factors, including candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, external non-profit market data, and business considerations.
