Working both independently and within a team each grounds worker is assigned an area covering approximately 15 - 20 facilities grouped geographically within the District. The Working Foreman assigns responsibilities and monitors the electronic work order system for any Grounds related requests. Note: Duties vary depending on each building assigned.

Daily duties and tasks include routine activities such as dumping outdoor trash receptacles (55 gallon drums) located at entrances, exits, athletic practice areas, parking lots, etc. Trash and liter pick-up are a continuous responsibility of this position addressed by the employee as encountered or needed. Routine landscaping responsibilities include any mix of mowing, trimming, weeding and edging. Employees also aerate, fertilize, top dress, patch, and lay sod as needed especially on athletic fields.
Other regular duties are performed during a large portion of the year including assisting with irrigation repairs, especially sprinkler head replacements. These responsibilities may require a nominal amount of hand shoveling or digging especially in instances where ditch maintenance requires a clean out. As needed/discovered grounds workers will work with the Pesticide Specialist and share the responsibility for the removal of nesting insects such as wasps or bees. In addition, Grounds Workers conduct monthly inspections of property fence lines and gates completing necessary minor repairs, especially for gate hinges. In addition, employees often work with Irrigation Specialists, and the Heavy Equipment Operator on larger specialized projects.
  1. The District has numerous athletic and outdoor activity spaces; grounds workers hold the primary responsibility for the long-term health and availability of these facilities. Grounds workers perform regular maintenance and repairs working to continuously offset the effects of this heavy use. Athletic fields often require detailed specifications for each sport i.e. soccer vs softball, and grounds workers are responsible for understanding and providing the specialized mowing and field maintenance necessary for these activities.

  1. Several seasonal responsibilities are also a part of the grounds workers' duties. As scheduled employees are responsible for safely trimming a variety of trees throughout our properties. These duties require the use of chainsaws, trimmers, stump grinders, and teams will use "bucket trucks" to access the tallest of these. Winterization of irrigation systems is also a priority for this position conducting pressurized line blowouts and irrigation pump maintenance service. Other seasonal tasks include snow removal plowing parking lots and property access points. Hand shoveling is completed on a very limited basis assisting building staff with entrances and exits when necessary.

In addition, facilities within the city limits require annual back-flow testing and grounds workers assigned to these duties certify district properties meet regulatory requirements. Facilities outside of city limits require a minimum of annual maintenance for ditches and canal access points.
  1. Grounds employees work in support of several special or annual events throughout the District. Annual high school graduation activities require employees to perform a high volume of activities over a short period of time at multiple locations. These commitments may require a temporary reorganization and prioritization of routine or daily responsibilities.
