Job Description Summary:
Under limited supervision, to perform a variety of semi-skilled to skilled maintenance, repair and construction tasks on the Flatirons Golf Course property and facilities. Provides training and oversight of team golf-maintained properties. Performs related duties as required.
Job Description:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs as a lead worker by golf staff and operations, including the following:

  • Analyzes conditions, plans, priorities then assigns and coordinates duties.
  • Monitors work in progress to identify problems and to ensure organized and efficient work and quality work product including providing leadership in solving operations related problems that arise in the field.
  • Responsible for hiring, performance management, and training of regular and seasonal employees, volunteers, community service workers, jail crew workers and others. This includes providing work instruction and task assignment, communicating job expectations, providing appropriate feedback on performance, correcting problems with work habits or safety issues, ensuring adherence to City and Department policies, and the accuracy of reported time use.
  • Oversees and tracks training programs related to equipment safety, IPM practices, wildlife management, natural lands maintenance and others.
  • Coordinates work with other Parks field staff to ensure timely response to ongoing maintenance needs, special projects, and resolution of identified issues or emergencies.
  • Assists with field aspects of contracted work. Oversee contractor work and ensure completion prior to recommending payment. Will report issues to upper-level staff. Ensures natural lands activities take into consideration other projects, and events regarding habitat or other best management practices.
  • May coordinates with special event promoters, other city departments, cart vendors, and merchants to ensure safe and successful special events and vendor set-ups, including electricity, water, refuse collection and removal and communicating risk management issues.

Prepares and maintains golf course greens, tees, fairways, rough and other general areas. This includes the following:
  • Irrigation management and repairs
  • Waters and maintains playing surfaces.
  • Mows, waters, re-sods, performs aeration, fertilization, topdressing, overseeding and repairs turf areas.
  • Fabricates maintenance equipment and tools.
  • Cleans and maintains restroom facilities.
  • Ensures that the golf course property is safe and clean for public use.
  • Vandalism repairs.
  • Repairs and replacements including warranty issues.
  • All safety surfacing.
  • Maintains and repairs all fencing adjacent to walks and paths.
  • Maintains an appropriate replacement and repair parts inventory and project cost estimates.

Performs horticultural tasks. This includes the following:
  • Plans, plants, and removes annual flower beds.
  • Tills, fertilizes, mulches flower beds, and chip mulches tree and shrub areas.
  • Prunes trees and shrubs and assists in ensuring trees are maintained in safe and healthy condition.
  • Implements the fertilizer program. Performs chemical and manual weed control in all turf, flower, and shrub areas.

Performs turf maintenance tasks including:
  • Performs mowing, edging, aeration, fertilization, topdressing, overseeding, and other related turf cultural practices.
  • Perform soils analysis and develops appropriate soil enhancement/fertilization schedules to create healthy turf.
  • Provides organic turf management in designated areas.
  • Performs turf renovation projects including soil enhancement, sodding, seeding and natural grass renovation.
  • Performs natural lands mowing and reseeding.
  • Schedules, repairs, and assists in installation of sprinklers, irrigation piping, and other irrigation system components.
  • Serves as Irrigation Lead in the operation and maintenance of the irrigation pump system.
  • Reports irrigation, tree, or other golf course issues to supervisor.
  • Perform proper public notification for fertilization and weed management.

Ensures proper use of vehicles, equipment, and tools to accomplish tasks. This includes:
  • Obtaining proper training before operation.
  • Performs routine maintenance and cleaning of machinery, equipment, and tools to ensure safe operation.
  • Performs basic safety checks and cleaning of all vehicles and equipment before use.
  • Report all damage and poorly functioning equipment and vehicles to the Golf Equipment Technician.

Other:
  • Performs related duties as required to meet the needs of the City.
  • Takes proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances, and acts accordingly to prevent accidents. Responsible for the safety of self, others, materials, and equipment. Uses all required safety equipment and follows all safety regulations, policies and procedures. Reports all accidents and damage to City property.
  • Responsible for knowing and complying with all City and department policies; participating in professional training and development; and adhering to attendance and workplace attire policies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Demonstrated ability, under minimal supervision from a supervisor, to direct, lead, and coordinate the work of others. Crew Leader or Workgroup Foreman training or experience.
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision.
  • Ability to utilize any required safety equipment including but not limited to normal personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Ability to follow OSHA regulations.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to communicate professionally and courteously with co-workers and the public.
  • Excellent customer service skills with the ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the public in stressful situations.
  • Willingness and ability to work irregular hours, weekends, evenings, holidays, or emergencies as required to respond to Parks and Forestry maintenance needs, including on-call for snow removal or tree related emergencies.
  • Ability to plan work activities, to provide performance feedback, and to plan schedules to meet objectives and goals of mission statement, and to keep accurate and timely records of work performed.
  • Demonstrated ability to act as a team member and collaborate with others.
  • Ability to perform record keeping functions.
  • Effective organization skills.
  • Organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience using personal computers and software such as word processing and email. Knowledge of Microsoft Office including Word and Excel.
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable motor vehicle record.
  • Have and maintain acceptable background information, including criminal conviction history and motor vehicle record.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment physical.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's Degree, certificate, or documented training in turf management, horticulture, or other agriculture related field.
  • Experience working in public environments in golf course management.
  • Experience with resource conservation in a golf maintenance environment.
  • Experience working in outdoor environments and/or high visitor use area.
  • Shown ability to develop and maintain successful organizational (internal and external) partnerships toward common goals.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to staff, volunteers, and members of the public.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • A minimum of 5 years on the job experience that demonstrates knowledge of horticulture and Integrated Pest Management techniques, turf, irrigation, athletic field and structure maintenance practices. and general park and structure maintenance practices.
  • Ability to obtain CPR/AED certification.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to perform a wide range of strenuous physical and manual tasks in both outdoor and indoor environments.
  • Physical ability to stand, walk, and kneel.
  • Ability to use a variety of long handled, manual, and power tools; and to operate equipment while working in and around other activities and moving vehicles.
  • Upper body strength to lift and carry items up to 65 pounds on a frequent basis.

  • Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities that permits the employee to communicate effectively on the telephone and in person.
  • Sufficient vision or other powers of observation that permits the employee to review, evaluate and prepare a variety of written documents and materials.
  • Ability to work under stress from demanding deadlines, public contact, and changing priorities and conditions.

Work Environment:
  • Ability to work in an office and indoor shop environment as well as outdoors year-round in a variety of weather conditions, including exposure to noise.

  • Works in a setting subject to continuous interruptions and background noises.
  • May work irregular hours, weekends, evenings, holidays, and or emergencies as required to respond to Parks system problems including irrigation system problems, site safety issues, emergency response, snow removal etc.

Machines and equipment used include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Machinery including riding and hand mowers, edgers, weedeaters, string trimmers, backpack blowers, power rakes, grinders, drills, York rake, chainsaws, rototillers, tractors, front end loaders, backhoes, dump trucks, pick-up trucks, utility vehicles, trailers, snowplows, snow blowers, small power equipment, and hand tools.
  • Office equipment and electronic equipment such as computers, related software, and telephones.
