Job Description
The Complex Systems Simulation and Optimization Group in the NREL Computational Science Center is seeking a full-time (40 hours per week) summer intern in Applied Mathematics. Emphasis is placed on solving problems in stochastic optimization, uncertainty quantification, and probabilistic forecasting applied to power systems operations and planning. This work will involve using existing NREL data sets and infrastructure models, machine learning tools, and probabilistic forecasting techniques to building uncertainty sets describing wind power generation at geographically distributed wind farms for multiple timescales. We are looking for a dynamic, motivated researcher with a strong technical background and an interest in the mission of NREL.
The intern will collaborate with NREL staff and researchers to develop probabilistic forecasting methods, optimization algorithms, and software in support of the effective use of high-performance computing (HPC) systems. This work will enable NREL and its collaborators to fully utilize NREL's HPC systems, Kestrel and Eagle, for research and development paramount to addressing national goals for utilization of renewable energy. Additionally, the intern is expected to help author, present, and assist in the preparation of technical papers, reports, and conference proceedings on topics related to Applied Mathematics and its applications to energy systems research.
Basic Qualifications
Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a Bachelor's, Master's or PhD degree program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution. Internship period cannot exceed 12 months past graduation. Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.
