The Department of Educational Leadership prepares candidates to effectively lead in Educational organizations in the Central Valley of California and beyond. Our graduates serve in leadership roles in diverse educational settings such as public and private schools, colleges, universities, and other related educational agencies. We have three graduate programs: Master of Arts in Educational Leadership Administration, Master of Arts in Higher Education Administration and Leadership (HEAL) and the Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Educational Leadership. Program graduates are continuously recognized as scholar-practitioners, instructional leaders, and agents of change in P-12 schools and in higher education.

Position Overview:

The Doctoral Program in Educational Leadership Research Center invites applicants for a Graduate Research Assistant. This is a 20 hours a week, 12-month, in-person position beginning in Spring 2024. The ideal candidate is a graduate student interested in developing and enhancing their research skills via supporting KSOEHD community members in their research and inquiry needs.

Anticipated Appointment Dates: This position is opened until filled. If you have applied and no other positions are available, you will be notified. The start date will be contingent on applicant's completed onboarding. Once hired, the appointment will continue through the Spring 2024 semester and may be extended through the Summer 2024 and Fall 2024 semesters. 

Spring 2024: January 16, 2024 - May 18, 2024

Summer 2024: May 20, 2024 - August 17, 2024

Fall 2024: August 19, 2024 - December 23, 2024

Hours/Units per week: The Graduate Research Assistant can work up to 20-hours per week;

  • 1-unit is equivalent to 2.66 hrs per week (40hrs x 1-unit/15-unit)
  • No more than 6-units, (or not to exceed 7.50 total wtus in one semester, which equates to 20-hours per week)

Job Duties may include the following but will be dependent upon the specific needs of the Research Center and the Research Center Director

  • Supports the Research Center Director in the daily activities of the center, including attending Center and Doctoral Program meetings, taking notes, and maintaining a system for the organization of activities;
  • Staff the Research Center;
  • Develop marketing and promotional materials for the Center;
  • Provide consultation (feedback, resources, support) to KSOEHD community members on research topics and ideas;
  • Plan workshop sessions on topics related to research and inquiry;
  • Co-lead biweekly communities of practice on research design, methodologies, and topics related to conducting research;
  • Collaborate with the Ed.D. Program Advisor and Graduate Assistant as necessary; and
  • Liaise with various college, campus, and community partners to support research partnership opportunities.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Flexibility in their schedule to include possible business and evening hours depending on Center needs;
  • Some familiarity and experience with research is helpful but not required; however, the candidate should indicate their interest in developing their research skills and understanding of research paradigms and methodologies; and,
  • Deep interest in social justice, equity, and inclusion as a key facet of their interest in developing as a researcher and leader;

Qualifications:

  • Must be enrolled in a Fresno State graduate program
  • Ability to maintain good academic standing (a minimum GPA 3.0)
  • Experience developing surveys using Google Forms or Qualtrics;
  • Understanding of social justice and equity issues in higher education; and,
  • Demonstrated commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff and students from diverse ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic background.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with qualitative and/or quantitative research methods.
  • Experience with qualitative data analysis software (e.g., NVIVO, Dedoose) and/or quantitative data analysis software (e.g., SPSS, Stata, R).

  2. Cover Letter addressing qualifications and experience.
  3. Current unofficial transcripts from your undergraduate and graduate education.  If you have attended more than one institution, please copy and combine these transcripts into one document. How to submit your unofficial transcripts
    1. If you are a Fresno State student:  Sign into https://my.fresnostate.edu.  Access your Unofficial Transcript.  Highlight all text throughout the document, copy it and paste it into a word processor document, and save the document with your name somewhere in the file name. 
    2. If you are not yet a Fresno State student:  Most U.S. universities allow students to access their academic records online, in a way similar to the way described above for Fresno State students.  Contact your institution's registrar to find out how to access your unofficial transcript and follow the process described above.  If you have transcripts from more than one institution, please copy them all and paste them into one document, as PageUp only allows one document to be uploaded into the link for transcripts.  Make certain that each institution is clearly indicated within this document.
  4. References: You will be asked to provide names and contact information for three professional references. The committee will request letters (do not upload letters).

The California State University Graduate Assistant Classification and Standards

  • Evaluations: GA's may be evaluated per CBA, Unit 11, Article 8 
  • Salary: Each department has different salary scales. Please check with your department for your Base Salary. The monthly salary is calculated based on the Weighted Teaching Units assigned.
  • Salary Schedule: The CSU salary schedule can be found here (Class Code = 2355 for Graduate Assistants).
  • Assignments: Assignments are made by Department Chair or Program Coordinator after consultation with the teaching associate.
  • Duties Form: Per the Collective Bargaining Agreement for Unit 11, a Duties Form (see Appendix E of the CBA) will be completed between the Department and Academic Student Employee. This form substantiates the jobs included for the department teaching associate position.
  • The Graduate Assistant is a student position for those actively enrolled in a graduate program at Fresno State. 
  • Students are limited to 20-hours of part-time work on campus.
