Job description

The Fisheries Technician I, under the direction of the Fisheries Assessment Biologist, is responsible for participating in the collection, recording and processing of fishery-related information necessary for the management of treaty-based tribal fishery.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)
  • Participates in fish capture and sampling activities on both the tribal research vessel and commercial fishing vessels using a variety of equipment and techniques.
  • Participates with maintenance, repair, and purchases of program equipment and sampling gear.
  • Conducts laboratory duties including; fish ageing, diet analysis and net repair.
  • Assists with operations of the program research vessel including; launching, loading, transporting, permitting, and maintenance of boat and trailer.
  • Assists with the organization of field data and entry into computer formats.
  • Coordinates sampling appointments with tribal commercial fishers.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)
  • Assists hatchery staff with walleye egg collection, hatchery and rearing pond activities, and fingerling harvesting activities.
  • All other job-related duties as assigned.

Immediate peers, peers in other department, immediate supervisor/manager, outside vendors/service providers, Tribal fishers and Tribal members.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Position heavy with team or dual lifting of 100 pounds and frequent lifting of 50 pounds. Physical factors include constant bending; frequent standing, walking, carrying/lifting, pulling, stooping, use of near/midrange/far vision, driving; occasional sitting, pushing, climbing, kneeling, reaching, use of hearing, smell, depth perception, color/field of vision and typing. Working conditions include constant exposure to weather; frequent exposure to wet/humidity, noise and air quality. Potential hazards include constant equipment use, Trucks, trailers, boats, pressurized tanks, nets, pumps, knives, power tools; frequent exposure to moving mechanical parts, working on boats, deep water, rough seas, exposed areas; occasional exposure to electric shock, high exposed places, chemicals, insecticides/pesticides, infectious expose and computer use. Must be able to work on the Great Lakes with risk of heavy seas (e.g. sea sickness). Protective equipment/clothing needed to perform job include rain suits/boots, gloves, insect repellent, dust masks, life jackets, eye protection and sunscreen.
REQUIREMENTS:
Education: High School diploma or equivalent required. Associates Degree in Natural Resources or Fisheries, Wildlife or Biology preferred.
Experience: Two years of experience in Fish ID/handling, use of nets, lines, boats, motors outdoor work preferred.
Certification/License: Must have a valid driver's license and be insurable by the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must comply with annual driver's license review and insurability standards with the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Will be required to complete and pass pre-employment drug testing.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Mechanical knowledge (equipment, use of boats/motors) required. Knowledge of fish identification and handling preferred. Knowledge of fish collection methods and techniques preferred. Knowledge of fish ageing and diet analysis preferred. Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet and data base software preferred. Knowledge of email/communication software and ability to navigate the internet preferred. Knowledge of Great Lakes fisheries and navigation preferred. Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Must be able to work extended hours when needed. Must be flexible and available to work various shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays. Must have excellent organizational skills; organizing work, prioritizing tasks and managing time. Must be able to drive pickup trucks (with trailer), load/launch boats and operate outboard motors. Must be capable with using pressurized tanks, knives and other equipment that could be injurious. Must maintain confidentiality. Native American preferred.
