This recruitment will be used to fill one hourlyGraduate Project Assistant position with Fisheries and Wildlife at Oregon State University (OSU).
We are seeking to hire an enthusiastic Fisheries Technician to assist a master's student at Oregon State University with juvenile Chinook Salmon sampling in the Grande Ronde watershed near La Grande, Oregon. The project focuses on juvenile Chinook dispersal patterns based on spawning location, riverscape conditions, and restoration efforts in Catherine Creek. A primary focus of the project and the Fish Behaviorscapes Lab (FBL) is investigating differences between hatchery and natural origin fish. The technician can expect to learn standard fish sampling techniques and field research methods.
This project will require communication and coordination with federal, state, and tribal agencies. We are seeking technicians who are eager to learn more about freshwater ecology and fisheries management. The technician may be required to assist in other areas of the lab, including field work and office work. Position Duties
Field work
  • Assist master's student and field crews with conducting fisheries surveys
  • Snorkel for fish in cold water temperatures in wadable rivers
  • Operate fisheries sampling equipment (backpack electrofishing, seine, etc.)
  • Handle and tag live fish (identification, measurements, PIT tags, fin clips, etc.)
  • Hike long distances in rugged terrain while wearing waders or drysuit and carrying field gear
  • Record habitat and fisheries data on paper datasheets and on portable tablets
  • Navigate in a remote setting using GPS 

Office/field house tasks
  • Enter and upload data (Microsoft Excel and ArcGIS applications)
  • Cross check (QA/QC) entered data
  • Assist in field house upkeep
  • Maintain, clean, and organize gear
  • Assist partnering agencies when applicable
  • Assist master's student, lab manager, and faculty PI with other tasks (research, management, office)

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered "full-time" by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Two years undergraduate coursework in relevant field (ecology, fisheries, wildlife, etc.) or equivalent experience (elaborate in cover letter)
  • Currently enrolled at an academic institution (<6 credit hours in the summer term) 
  • Ability to work under the working conditions described above 
  • Commitment to safety protocols that will be reviewed prior to the field season 
  • Keen attention to detail when completing tasks
  • Ability to contribute to a positive group dynamic and communicate needs effectively with crew leaders
  • Capacity to learn new skills
  • Flexibility to adapt to project needs throughout the season

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
This position requires driving a University vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the University; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a Motor Vehicle History Check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions (as per Voluntary and Compulsory Driver Standards OSU Standard 125-155-0200) as per OSU Standard 576-056-0000 et seq.
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • Experience working in an outdoor field environment and walking through streams/rivers with overlying vegetation and uneven surfaces
  • First aid training
  • Intellectual interest and investment for the research questions and study system
  • Familiarity with Excel and ArcGIS surveying applications (FieldMaps, Survey123)
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
Working Conditions:
The technician will be required to work 40 hours a week for the entirety of the field season (estimated June 17 - September 1) and should expect unusual work schedules that may include weekends, early mornings, or evenings. Housing will be provided while in La Grande, OR; technician must be willing to share room (possibly co-ed) and living accommodations with other field personnel. Food will not be provided but there is a grocery store nearby and a shared kitchen to prepare food. Field crews will commute to and from field sites daily using a vehicle provided by the project. Field sites are remote, so technician must be comfortable working out of cell phone service. Applicants must follow project safety and check-in/check-out protocols; crews will have Garmin inReach devices when in the field.
Applicants should be prepared to work in a range of weather conditions from cold rain to extreme summer heat. Crews may be exposed to biting/stinging insects, irritating vegetation, and wildlife encounters. Hiking in streams requires the ability to walk on slippery, uneven surfaces and climb over large in-stream structures. Applicants must be able to lift 50 lbs., carry heavy field gear long distances, and be comfortable wearing waders 8+ hours a day. Sampling will include capturing, anesthetizing, measuring, and tagging fish, therefore technicians should be comfortable handing live animals. All field sampling materials and gear will be provided by the project. 
In addition to field work sampling in La Grande, OR, the technician may spend periods of time while not in the field working in Corvallis assisting lab members and personnel with tasks related to fisheries research and management. These tasks may include research or lab work for graduate student projects and assisting the lab manager and PI with office tasks.
