The Global Head of Product Development is responsible for aligning the strategic direction of the Global Product Development organization with the Metagenics product leadership strategy across all three regional R&D centers located in the United States (Gig Harbor, WA), Europe (Ostend, Belgium) and Asia Pacific (Brisbane, Australia). This position will provide leadership, coaching and strategic direction to the Global Product Development team to ensure that global NPD/ EPD formulation and business continuance projects and initiatives are developed and brought to life, on time, on budget, in support of Metagenics' product leadership strategy.   The Global Head of Product Development will also lead formulation, commercialization, and NPD/EPD project management activities across the North American business of Metagenics.  This leader must be an out of the box thinker with the ability to drive the commercialization of innovative new product solutions through demonstrate strong leadership and collaboration skills with their many internal and external local and global partners.

Responsibilities

What you'll do:

  • Proactively engage the right resources in setting goals and delivering results. Lead indirectly through personal example.
  • Work closely with the Global Marketing and Innovation team on product pipeline management, prioritization, and resourcing to drive innovative new product launches in support of our product leadership strategy
  • Adapt Agile rituals and project management tools for deployment across new Product Development projects
  • Develop and manage annual Global Product Development budget
  • Take ownership of the short to mid-term (1-3 years) execution of functional strategy and the operational direction of the team
  • Track industry trends, relevant legislation, competitor activity and customer needs states to ensure product compliance, relevance, and leadership
  • Oversee the entire Product Development lifecycle and ensure the team meets project deadlines
  • Take ideas from the R&I and Global Innovation Managers and bring them to life as new or improved differentiated products in partnership with the Global Supply Chain Team
  • Champion the identification, evaluation, and implementation of innovative new technologies to support NPD/EPD projects
  • Create and maintain relationships with key suppliers and CMO's regarding new ingredients and products
  • Provide project feasibility assessments for innovation and operational projects
  • Manage global project issues and potential risk; providing solutions, facilitating resolutions and escalating as required
  • In support of Business Continuance (i.e. cost savings, supply chain issues, mfg. issues, label issues and reg issues) lead and manage Product Change Control (PCR) process in partnership with Procurement and Global Supply Chain
  • In support of Business Continuance, work with Manufacturing and QC leadership to resolve priority formula and process issues
  • Maintain an up-to-date understanding of industry advancements, key research and regulatory changes in relevant global markets
  • Lead and develop high performing teams to meet business expectations
  • Provide technical support for other departments as required

 

What you'll need:

 

The ideal candidate will have 15+ years of nutrition Product Development and commercialization experience, with a focus on innovative new formats beyond tablets/capsules/softgels/powders to enhance consumer use experience.  The candidate should have a proven track record in a fast-paced environment.  Consumer product focus is preferred (i.e. FMCPG). This candidate will also have great scientific and interpersonal skills along with a strong desire for continuous learning and willingness to embrace Agile mindset, methodologies, and tools.

 

Demonstrated Knowledge and Abilities

 

Must have a Bachelor's degree in science, with a preference for food science/food technology, pharmacy, or other related technical fields including process or packaging engineering; Masters or PhD. A plus.

  • Leadership experience - leading team of Product Development scientists/engineers, leading leaders, ability ot partner with matrix Sr. Leadership team, ability to lead across different cultures/regions, demonstrated emotional intelligence, experience with staff development, retention and recruiting.
  • Global Product Development experience - US plus other market(s) with preference for Asia or EU, ability to manage remote leadership teams across multiple time zones, ability to leverage global resources to support multiple regions.
  • Project management experience - Agile/Scrum preferred, prioritization and resource allocation, backlog grooming, risk management, ability to resolve roadblocks and commercialize products on tight timeline.
  • Business continuance/Supply Chain support experience - material cost savings experience, mfg. support (mfg. remote, mfg. efficiency lean/6 sigma), process focused approach to problem solving, demonstrated ability to partner with Supply Chain leadership.

Desired Knowledge (Must have 1-2 of the below)

  • Agile rituals and tools (SCRUM, Kanban, Design Spring)
  • Package development experience - packaging innovations, sustainability improvements, B-Corp, etc. Working knowledge of analytical assay methodologies, quality assurance
  • Experience with identification, evaluation, and commercialization of new technologies (ingredient/package/process)
  • Working knowledge of US FDA Regulatory and Labeling requirements
  • Working knowledge of the manufacturing processes for solid dose, powders and other experiential delivery formats
  • Working knowledge of management of external partnerships (contract manufacturing)

 

Physical requirements/working conditions:

  • Sits at a computer station, meeting table or work desk for more than two-thirds of each day
  • Stands and walks to other stations and departments throughout the day
  • Uses hands and fingers to operate computers and office equipment most of the day
  • May stoop or crouch to access files or storage
  • Requires clear vision at 20 inches or less with or without corrective lenses
  • Hearing and speech within normal ranges and sufficient for clear communication face to face and especially via the telephone
  • Lifts up to 10 pounds regularly; lifts 25 pounds occasionally
  • Exposed to noise levels typical of office environments

 

Compensation:

The current range for this role based out of Gig Harbor, WA is $222,000/yr - $244,000/yr.

 

The wage range for this role takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and other business and organizational needs.  

 

This role may also be eligible to participate in a discretionary annual incentive program, subject to the rules governing the program, whereby an award, if any, depends on various factors, including, without limitation, individual and organizational performance.
