Job Description
The Exus Project Development Department is seeking a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Intern for our Summer 2024 intern program out of our corporate HQ Pittsburgh, PA office. This is a paid full-time position. Anticipated duration will be approximately 8 weeks (June to August 2024 timeframe). Duration, start, and end dates are flexible to each candidate’s school schedule. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of the VP of Technology Development while collaborating with development Project Managers on various GIS related projects.
Responsibilities:
- Collect, process, and manage spatial data from various sources, such as satellite imagery, aerial photos, surveys, or public databases.
- Perform spatial analysis and modeling using GIS software and tools, such as ArcGIS, ArcMap, and QGIS.
- Create and update maps, charts, graphs, and reports to visualize and communicate spatial information and findings.
- Assist in the site selection and suitability assessment of potential Renewable Energy projects, considering factors such as land use, environmental impact, grid connection, and resource availability.
- Create Geospatial Layer map of specific Solar Module types, solar inverter types and Solar tracker types currently installed in the US.
- This will involve researching publicly available data as well as contacting equipment manufacturers and using creative data mining techniques to create this layer.
- Create a regional suitability map of the continental US that highlights areas where specific solar components are within each component’s technical specifications.
- Effort will involve using Component technical specs which are based on nominal operating elevations above sea level, operating temperature, and relative humidity ranges.
- A secondary layer map will combine areas of high hail frequency, areas of large hail size, areas of extreme ambient temperatures, and high humidity areas that all affect module and inverter performance.
- The goal is to be able to input latitude and longitude and a summary of the site’s characteristics are displayed in an attributes table summary.
- Time permitting, develop a GIS tool to provide initial/quick risk register reports (mapping: soil conditions, proximity to airports, % wetlands, depth to bedrock, typical soil conditions, max slopes on site, local labor info, IRA energy community area, coal closure census tract etc...).
- An undergraduate Junior or Senior or Graduate student, currently enrolled and attending an accredited college or university.
- Pursuing or completing a degree in GIS, geography, cartography, environmental science, engineering, or a related field.
- Willing to work at the Exus Corporate HQ office in downtown Pittsburgh, PA for the duration of the program.
- Motivated, detail orientated with an interest in Renewable Energy development.
- Proficient in standard MS Office applications, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Experience with Google Earth (KMZs and KMZ conversion experience).
- Attention to detail/accuracy, analytical mindset and outstanding quantitative skills sets.
- Team player with enthusiasm for learning, pushing technical limits and finding solutions for resolving complex technical challenges.
