Position Function:
The Geosystems Research Institute (GRI) at Mississippi State University (MSU) is a multidisciplinary institute that is focused on collaborative research and activities in geospatial technologies. The GIS Coordinator will work with a team of geospatial experts on multiple project efforts. These efforts will assist in the continued development and delivery of activities for the Geospatial Education and Outreach (GEO) Project, a component of the Regional Geospatial Modeling Grant (RGMG). This position requires proven proficiency with the technical and educational aspects of processing, managing, and analysis of geospatial datasets. They will be expected to disseminate project results for educations, outreach, and scientific activities.

Department Profile:
Established in 2000, the Geosystems Research Institute is a collaborative of academic scientists, engineers, and government and industry stakeholders active in conducting research to advance knowledge and practice in earth and it's systems to improve policy and public awareness. The Geosystems Research Institute's approach to research provides an avenue for Mississippi State University to build strong relationships with local, regional, and national agencies and businesses to do work aimed at solving some of today's most pressing environmental issues. In helping carry out Mississippi State University's mission of service and outreach, the Geosystems Research Institute offers a variety of educational opportunities and services to assist researchers, state and federal entities, and the public in utilizing geospatial technologies and data.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Responsibilities include, but not limited to, the following:
•Development and delivery of Geospatial workshops at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels.
•Analyze and develop geospatial workflow recommendations for federal, state, and local government agencies and users.
•Collaborate and/or lead the development of geospatial databases with a multidisciplinary approach.
•Operational knowledge of field data collection equipment.
•Develop web-based geospatial applications for data transfer and dissemination.
•Compose written educational resources, technical information, and written reports.
•Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Geographic Information Systems, Geography, Earth Science, Data/Computer Science, or closely related field and 3 years of relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with Esri and open source geospatial software and applications, including geospatial programing. Prior experience with the development of geospatial curriculum and resources for face-to-face and online training activities for higher education or adult education. Excellent oral and written communication skills, be self-motivated and creative, and able to work effectively both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team. A Master's degree with 3 - 5 years of relevant experience and demonstrated competency performing geospatial analysis, GIS data management and geospatial project coordination.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Experience with Windows OS, Microsoft Office, Esri and QGIS software, spatial databases.
Proficiency with Esri ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online applications.
Experience with data preparation, data management, workflows, cartography, and spatial analysis, and coordinate reference systems.
Proficiency using Python or other similar scripting languages to manipulate data and develop reproducible workflows.
Experience with Canvas or other Learning Management Systems and instructional design.
Effective verbal and written communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences.
Able to work in a team environment.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
Job frequently requires walking, standing, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
Vision requirements: Ability to see information in print and/or electronically.
Hearing requirements: Heavy telephone contact requires ability to hear and respond to telephone conversations.
Overnight travel should be expected.
