Milliman’s San Francisco-based property and casualty (P&C) practice focuses on applying advanced actuarial techniques and geospatial technology to develop innovative insurance products for traditional & start-up insurers. Our team includes actuaries, data scientists, and GIS experts. We are thought leaders in climate change, artificial intelligence, telematics, and other leading-edge research. We also do traditional actuarial work such as ratemaking, reserving, predictive modeling, competitive analysis, and a variety of special projects.

What You Will Do

The GIS Consultant works on some of today’s most important insurance problems, including modernizing flood insurance, addressing the wildfire crisis in California, and quantifying the impacts of climate change on future insurance availability and affordability. They are responsible for cartography and analysis in addition to data acquisition, enrichment, review, and editing to support our client projects and software. Since these challenges are hyper local in nature, GIS expertise is a central component of our workflows and has helped us become the industry leaders we are today.

The GIS Consultant will work directly with other GIS professionals, actuaries, data scientists, and developers on a broad range of client consulting projects and software products. Projects and responsibilities will vary widely depending on the specific engagement. GIS Consultant responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Manage client communication and deliverables throughout the lifecycle of a project
  • Supervise GIS Analysts and Interns, including technical coaching, training and code reviews
  • Direct, train, and actively assist staff with various GIS workflows including but not limited to:
    • Acquisition, review, and processing of third-party GIS data
    • Data visualization and cartography for client deliverables and internal decision making
    • Spatial analysis in Python using arcpy, pandas, and other libraries
    • Create custom raster and vector datasets across multiple platforms, such as ArcGIS, PostgreSQL, and Microsoft SQL
    • Prepare and append geographic variables to large location level datasets
  • Draft proposals, marketing materials, and external communications
  • Comply with internal quality control and risk management guidelines

 

This role will require up to 10% travel nationwide, for company and industry events, client meetings, etc.

 

What We Are Looking For

Professional Qualifications (required)

  • A minimum of 6 years of directly related professional experience
  • Current or previous managerial or informal leadership experience
  • Proficient with ESRI ArcPro software, including map layouts
  • Proficient with Python scripting, including arcpy
  • Experience with data transformation, summarization, and analysis in Python and Excel
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government issued Public Trust security clearance

Preferred Qualifications

  • GIS Professional certification
  • Master’s degree in Geographic Information Science or related field
  • Prior professional experience in property insurance and/or catastrophe risk assessment

Location

This role is based out of the Milliman office in San Francisco, California, but candidates hired into this role may work remotely anywhere in the U.S.

Compensation

The salary range is $107,000 to $217,000, depending on a combination of factors, including but not limited to education, relevant work experience, qualifications, skills, certifications, location, etc. In addition, we offer a signicant performance-based bonus plan, prot sharing, and generous benets.
