Job Summary:

The Gift Planning Officer is a critical member of USF Development's fundraising team. Reporting to the Director, Gift Planning, the Gift Planning Officer works as a field fundraiser soliciting planned gifts. This position will cultivate, solicit, and steward new and existing planned giving donors.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Gift Planning Officer is a front-line fundraiser focused on raising future support, including qualifying and identifying prospects for planned gifts.
Gift Planning Officer will work with the Manager of Gift Planning Marketing and Administration to develop and implement fundraising marketing strategies, create and execute fundraising campaigns. Gift Planning Officer will partner with colleagues and volunteers toward achieving monetary and participation goals and participate in periodic prospect meetings with other frontline fundraisers, alumni engagement staff, and other teams.
As a member of the Gift Planning team, the Gift Planning Officer supports the larger goals and projects of USF Development, including some evening and weekend work on high-profile engagement events. Some local travel to visit prospects is required.
Key duties and responsibilities include:
  • Identify Gift Planning prospects through data mining, relationship building and working with the Prospect Development and Analytics team.
  • Manages a prospect list of 100-125 donors (individuals capable of making planned gifts) and is expected to establish ongoing relationships with individual donors and meet specific goals for contacts through personal visits, phone calls, and other meaningful contacts and completed solicitations.
  • The Gift Planning Officer will be assigned an internal partnership portfolio of approximately 3-6 fundraisers on the Annual Giving, Major Gifts, Principal Giving, Athletics, and/or Parent Giving Teams to collaborate in gift solicitations, and promote Gift Planning, and depending on experience, provide expertise in connection with bequests, charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, real estate, and other non-cash assets.
  • Initiate gift discussions with and respond to inquiries from donors and prospects.
  • Prepare gift illustrations for non-cash asset and deferred gifts, including Charitable Gift Annuities, Charitable Remainder Trusts, and Real Estate gifts.
  • Draft pledge and gift agreements with varying degrees of complexity, testamentary gifts, charitable remainder trust and charitable gift annuity documents, and sample bequest language for gifts to USF.
  • Steward and manage established relationships to maximize engagement, renew annual giving, and present new opportunities for further engagement.
  • The Gift Planning Officer supports all aspects of Gift Planning for USF's Office of Development and understands related tax and legal matters with the goal of educating donors and colleagues.
  • Works cooperatively, collaboratively, and strategically with development colleagues including the rest of the Gift Planning team as well as major gifts, annual giving, principal giving, prospect research, stewardship, engagement, and other teams.
  • Works in collaboration with Development Communications to write donor testimonials
  • Works in collaboration with Manager of Gift Planning Marketing and Estate Administration to maintain Gift Planning website and produce Gift Planning mailers, emails, and other marketing pieces, act as a liaison with external Planned Giving marketing firm, and assist with designing, writing, and managing language for related print, email, and social media appeals for targeted groups.
  • In collaboration with the Gift Planning team, develop fundraising strategies, and track and analyze results of development activities.
  • Becomes an expert on the various designations, activities and programs at USF for which gifts are being sought or that may be of interest to donors.
  • Recommends new approaches, procedures and processes to effect continual improvements in efficiency of department and services performed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience with a preference for candidates who have advanced degrees.
  • Gift Planning Officer: A minimum of 3 years of progressive and successful development experience in Gift Planning in the higher education arena or related experience, with preference for candidates who have experience with comprehensive campaigns.
  • Strong working knowledge of key gift vehicles used to create legacy commitments
  • Familiarity with the range of non-cash assets used to create deferred and current-use gifts
  • Familiarity with development database systems, with a preference for Salesforce expertise.
  • Deep knowledge and familiarity of the University and Bay Area communities.
  • Ability to understand the needs and interest of planned giving donors in order to develop relationships between them and the University, and a demonstrated track record of success with identifying, qualifying, soliciting and stewarding planned gift donors.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including demonstrated writing and editing skills in the preparation of proposals, and in the drafting of related correspondence, often for the signature of institutional leaders.
  • Stellar relationship building skills and ability to build rapport with internal and external stakeholders around innovative ideas and programs.
  • Commitment to appropriate use of sensitive and confidential constituent data and familiarity with relevant privacy laws.
  • Excellent time management and follow-up skills and ability to work well under deadline and to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to travel around the region and to other areas of the country.
  • Occasional evening and weekend work, as required.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.

Salary Range :
The salary range for this position is $105,000/yr - $115,000/yr. Offers will be based on candidate experience and education, as well as equity within the University of San Francisco.
