Job Description:

Idaho Power is looking for a Generation Specialists at either the Apprentice I orApprentice II level to join our Hydro Operations crew team. It’s an exciting time to work for Idaho Power. We’re working toward our goal of providing 100% clean energy by 2045, and our work plays a critical role in our customers’ lives and in communities we serve across Idaho and Oregon.

Note: We will be filling these positions at our Upper Salmon, American Falls, and Swan Falls hydro power plants.

What does a Generation Specialist Apprentice I or II – Hydro Operations do for us?

This is a training position, designed to prepare future Generation Specialists for work in a team-based environment. These individuals will learn how to operate and maintain a hydro plant and associated equipment. While under direct supervision this individual will perform necessary operating and maintenance functions essential for the safe and efficient operation of the area, plant, and facilities. They also complete assigned tasks, including preventive and corrective maintenance and ensures necessary generation by performing manual switching and operation in the event of an emergency (i.e., failure of automated generation dispatch systems) while following FERC and other regulations.

A COMPETITIVE CANDIDATE WILL HAVE

Knowledge of:

  • Basic electricity and the function, operation, troubleshooting, and repair of complex equipment through use of drawings and instructional manuals

Skills in:

  • Operating and/or maintaining of power plants

  • Inspecting and maintaining heavy equipment

  • Basic computing

  • Basic electrical

  • Effective Interpersonal communication

  • Operating test equipment

  • Print reading

Ability to:

  • Maintain high productivity with supervision

  • Work with a high degree of accountability

  • Use good judgment and initiative in resolving work problems

  • Establish positive working relationships in a team-based environment

  • Respond to emergencies in excess of normal working hours

  • Perform other duties/tasks as assigned

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Apprentice I:

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED

Experience:

  • Currently employed as an Idaho Power Pre-Apprentice Generation Specialist

OR

  • 1 year demonstrated education/work experience in electrical, generation, or power plants

OR

  • An equivalent combination of education, experience, or military training

Licenses & Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position

Apprentice II:

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED

Experience:

  • 1 year of demonstrated education/work experience in electrical, generation, or power plants that provides the desired knowledge, skills, and abilities

OR

  • An equivalent combination of education, experience, or military training

OR

  • Currently enrolled in Idaho Power’s Generation Apprenticeship Training Program AND 6 months power plant experience

Licenses & Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This job will require occasional, physically strenuous work for long periods of time and in adverse weather conditions. Job requires the ability to bend, stoop, squat, crouch, crawl, climb ladders and into and out of vehicles, twist, kneel, balance and reach. Rarely lift shoulder-high and above items weighing up to 50 lbs.; rarely lift waist-high and knee-high items weighing up to 75 lbs. Occasionally use exertional force of up to 50 lbs. to push/pull items. Rarely carry with one hand items weighing up to 50 lbs. or items weighing up to 75 lbs. with two hands. Requires the ability to operate a vehicle. Must be able to grasp and hold simple hand tools and other materials and use fine motor skills to use a computer keyboard and handle small hand tools. Applicant must be able to perform the essential functions of the job without posing a direct threat of harm to self, others, or property.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be at least 18 years of age. Physically able to perform all essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation and without posing a direct threat of harm to self, others, or property. This training position can progress to an Apprentice II and Journeyman level; however, the individual will be required to bid all Generation Specialist (Operations) postings within the region until he/she successfully obtains a regular power plant position. Plant rotation and/or relocation is a condition of employment while in this training position.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Job requires the ability to respond to emergencies outside of and/or in excess of normal working hours; for apprentice II the role requires being on call on a rotating basis for the power plant and ability to respond in a 60-minute time frame. Job requires occasional travel with overnight stays. Job requires the employee to obtain and wear approved safety footwear and FR clothing. Company housing may be available, but occupancy is not required.
