Summary
This position is responsible for teaching psychology in the Behavioral Sciences Pathway. The position will be responsible for offering a variety of psychology courses with a portion of each semester's course load possible within the Corrections Education Program or at the Adrian and/or Hillsdale centers of Jackson College. Other duties include creation of course materials, oversight of assessment, and mentoring adjunct faculty. A commitment to equity in the classroom and continuous curriculum innovation, including instruction for condensed semesters, competency-based learning, hybrid and online courses is expected. This full-time teaching position includes instruction of 33-35 contact hours per academic year. Teaching assignments will be based upon the specific applicant's qualifications and experience, but with a primary focus upon Introductory Psychology and other courses in psychology, and may may also include teaching other courses in the Behavioral Sciences as needed and as appropriate to the candidate's qualifications. Leadership skills will be necessary as the College seeks broad engagement with the local community and with global partners. Teaching courses at other JC locations, online and hybrid instruction, evening courses, weekend courses, and at prison locations will be required. Candidates must possess the ability to obtain a Law Enforcement Information Network (LEIN) clearance and maintain it annually, at all Michigan correctional facilities. Other primary responsibilities include curriculum development and assessment, program development and review, advising students and meeting scheduled office hours. Participation in department/discipline meetings and in college-wide committees is required. The candidate must work effectively with other faculty and staff in a rapidly changing team environment. Support and contribution to diversity and student success initiatives and commitment to campus and curricular internationalization efforts is expected. A commitment to professional development and learning is required. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to the mission, vision values and beliefs of Jackson College through working with diverse populations but still be able to connect one-on-one with students. This individual will have good listening skills and the ability to understand the needs of others, be flexible, and maintain a high work ethic and integrity.
Essential Functions
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned:
Planning:
  • Contribute to department, academic program, and curriculum development.
  • Thoroughly plan daily, weekly, and semester activities to implement the curriculum.
  • Develop instructional plans focusing on higher-order thinking skills.

Instruction:
  • Motivate learning through effective planning, enthusiasm, and diverse instructional modes.
  • Assess learning through questioning, quizzes, presentations, and assignments.
  • Provide remediation when needed.
  • Administer exams consistent with learning goals.

Minimum Qualifications
Qualifications:
Education and/or Experience:
-Required:
- Master's degree or higher in psychology, or master's degree or higher in counseling or closely related field with 18 graduate credit hours in psychology.
- Teaching experience in psychology or related courses.
- Strongly Preferred:
- Two years of teaching experience at the community college level in psychology or a related field.
- Qualified under the guidelines of the Higher Learning Commission to teach additional disciplines in the behavioral sciences.
- Experience in creating courses, course materials, and content for both face-to-face and online instruction.
Language Skills:
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex documents.
- Effective response to sensitive inquiries or complaints.
- Proficient in writing speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques.
- Capable of delivering effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
Mathematical Skills:
- Utilize arithmetic and apply concepts of basic algebra as appropriate to the job responsibilities.
Reasoning Ability:
- Apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems.
- Deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, musical notes, etc.) in its most difficult phases.
- Handle a variety of abstract and concrete variables.
Physical Demands:
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.
- Frequently required to sit and use hands to finger, handle, or feel.
- Occasionally required to stand and walk, reach with hands and arms.
- Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment:
- The employee is occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions while traveling between buildings on campus.
- Must be willing to follow Bloodborne Pathogen and OSHA requirements due to potential exposure in lab and clinical settings.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
