POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

Position Title: Affiliate Faculty in Mathematics Education, to start August 6, 2024.
Summary: The Department of Mathematics seeks one Affiliate Faculty for a full time, 9-month, continuing position. After initial 1-year contracts for each of the first two years, the position may be renewed with continuing 3-year contracts.
Required Qualifications and Education:
  • By August 6, 2024, either (1) a Master’s degree in Mathematics Education or (2) a Master’s degree in a related field (such as Mathematics or Education) with a combination of either 18 graduate credit hours or evidence of tested experience related to expertise in Mathematics Education or mathematics teacher education or elementary teacher professional development in Mathematics. The Master’s degree must be from an accredited institution.
  • Demonstrated interest in teacher preparation courses, especially at the elementary (PK-6) level.
  • Evidence of reflective thinking about the teaching and learning of mathematics.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, such as the ability to interact with others with respect, empathy, and cultural humility, including the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and access, such as experience using inclusive teaching practices or commitment to the success of all students of all ability levels.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • PK-9 teaching experience
  • Experience or demonstrated potential to teach integrated content-pedagogy Mathematics Education courses for pre-service elementary teachers such as GVSU’s MTH 126, 226, 322, 323, 324, 326, 328, 428 (see

  • Experience/interest with learner-centered and active learning approaches to instruction
  • Willingness to employ a variety of teaching methodologies, including facilitating field experiences in elementary schools, and having students use appropriate technological tools to support their learning
  • Experience/interest collaborating with elementary teachers, or supervising preservice teachers, or leading mathematics professional development for teachers
  • Experience/interest with inclusive teaching including but not limited to complex instruction, culturally relevant, or sustaining pedagogy
Responsibilities: The standard teaching load for Affiliate Faculty is 27 credits per year (3-4 courses per semester, usually 2-3 preps). Teaching responsibilities will consist primarily of teaching Mathematics Education courses (that integrate both content and pedagogy) for students seeking elementary certification. Affiliate faculty often teach 5 days per week, with some classes meeting evenings or early mornings (but not both). Most classes meet on our Allendale campus, but Affiliate Faculty members sometimes teach courses on our Grand Rapids campus. In addition, many Mathematics Education courses have an embedded field experience and faculty are expected to supervise this experience in local schools during class. Responsibilities include holding office hours, attending regular course instructor meetings, and engaging in professional development. There are opportunities for department service, but service is not mandatory. Mentoring by experienced faculty is provided. Employment begins August 6, 2024.

Department/College: The Mathematics Department at Grand Valley State University serves over 200 majors and 8000 students annually in its classes.
